DGR’s Ultimate List of Anti-Heroes

DGR-Ultimate list of anti-heroes

If you know me or read my reviews then you already know I tend to have a type of book I gravitate to: the gritty and fucked up sort. It’s no secret that I love an alphahole, but what I love even more is the anti-hero. The baddie that you just can’t help but love, and you do end up loving them. Hard. He may hero that may be inherently good but does bad things. Or he may be downright bad, but there will be a woman out there that is just perfect for him. Or he may be something of a cross between those two. Whatever or whoever he is, it’s pretty much guaranteed that I will be shaking in pervy glee to be reading about them. Does that make me slightly screwed up? Nah. Just makes for one kick-ass read. Though the years I’ve read my fair share of anti-heroes, but the ones I’m about to list below are my ultimate favorites. They’re the ones I recommend blindly whenever someone asks me for a rec. You’ll notice I’m going to be spotlighting my very favorites, and below I will also give you a few other worth mentioning. That’s not to say I didn’t love those books either, I loved each book on this list. But the ones spotlighted are hands down, bar none, some of my very favorites.

So let’s get right into it, shall we?

THE DARK DUET by CJ Roberts

Caleb

What kind of list would this be without the book that first began my obsession? Caleb was the anti-hero that first popped my cherry, and damn what an anti-hero to start with. This man is utterly FUBAR. If you’ve read this series, you know exactly what I mean. And if you haven’t? Umm…I’m fairly certain you must have been living under a rock somewhere. No joke. Climb on out of there and come join us on the dark side. We have cookies. Or is it cockies? I get confused…

In the Company of Killers by J.A. Redmerski

Victor Faust

In the theme of going by reading order, let’s talk about Victor Faust. When I first read Killing Sarai, I wasn’t sure what I was getting into. All I knew is that I read and loved The Edge of Never and then went, “Oh look! A new book by J.A.!” Boy did I step into it… LOL! Here I went from angsty NA to gritty romantic suspense. As far as dark books, this one barely bleeps on the scale. It’s more thriller and suspense, but Victor is all baddie. A contract killer and a girl that’s desperate to escape nine years of captivity. This book was AMAZING! I haven’t read past the second in this series, but I hear they’re just as good as the first! Reviving Izabel is the continuation of book 1, but the rest are different characters.

Zeth fucking Mayfair. Does he even need an introduction? If you haven’t read this series yet, prepare yourself for a binge. They’re impossible not to read back to back. The story of Zeth and Sloane is gritty and so erotic, you may need to keep some ice on standby for your ovaries.

Mr. Anthony Rawlings. The man who pretty much guaranteed that you will never look at a cocktail napkin the same again. The man who fucked with your head almost as much as he did with Claire’s. UNFINISHED HEROES series by Kristen Ashley

Knight sebring

It’s impossible for me to pick a favorite in this series, so I won’t. I’ll just tell you about the one that started it all. Knight “Daddy” Sebring. Le sigh. Now I have a love hate relationship with this book. I loved the story to pieces, but the daddy thing downright creeped me out. Yeah. I’m one of those perverts with some limits apparently and the daddy thing is that one limit. BUT if you can overlook that, the story is absolutely amazing and so is the entire series. I was lucky enough to read an advanced reader’s copy of Sebring and I can tell you it’s just as good if not the best in the series. These are milder on the dark and gritty scale. The heroes in these books are inherently good men that just happen to do some bad things but for good reason. If you haven’t read these yet, they’re currently on sale for only $1.99 in anticipation of the release of Sebring on January 11.

DESTROYED by Pepper Winters

Obsidian Fox

This was my first Pepper Winters book and it absolutely blew me away. I ugly cried myself through the ending and couldn’t stop thinking about it for days after. Having read all of Pepper’s books since then, I can definitely tell you that on Pepper’s particular scale of dark, this is gray. But in its own right? It’s not easy read. It was gritty and emotional but yet wonderful all at once. An underground fighter and the woman who wants to heal him and yet they heal each other. *dreamy sigh*

Destroyed is a standalone title.

THE BUTCHER series by Francette Phal

Knox Bishop

Have you ever wondered what would happen if Captive in the Dark and Dexter had a love child? This fucking book is what! My. God. Do you like a dark romance with a redeemable hero that slowly succumbs to his inevitable love for the heroine? Perhaps an anti-hero that has what you’d like to think is a semblance of a conscience? Well fuck that and your delicate sensibilities! Because you sure as fuck won’t find it here! DOn’t say I didn’t warn you. This book is fucked the fuck up. I’m not even kidding. But it’s also seeeeew gewd. Like ridiculously addicting good. Oh and it also ends on a motherfucker of a cliffhanger, so…yeah. I’ve been stalking Francette for news on book two and she’s working in it but there’s no definitive release date just yet.

PRISONER by Annika Martin & Skye Warren

Grayson

This book had one of the most intense first meetings I have ever read. Period. It may have had something to do with the hero being led down the prison hall as an inmate when it happened? Yeah. That could have been it. But really, this is probably my favorite Skye Warren book I’ve read to date. It’s gritty, sexy and completely unputdownable. While part of a series, each book will be a different character and this one had a fully finished HEA. I’m absolutely salivating for any news that these authors will be writing more in this series but so far nothing. So I’ll just be in my corner…rocking and crying.

KING by T.M. Frazier

King

I have yet to read a book by this author that I haven’t devoured in one sitting. This woman knows how to write one dark and utterly fucked up romance. King and Doe’s story was no light read but man was it delicious. Their story spans over two books; King and Tyrant. We now also got Bear’s book in Lawless and I’m eagerly anticipating the continuation of that with Soulless.

Now here’s a baddie for you. Vanquish is book 2 in Pam’s Deliver series but you can also read it as a standalone. Van was first introduced in Deliver and he was ALL bad. This was a straight up villain. And yet, when you took a deeper look, you’d notice something just below his surface. Something…vulnerable. Now don’t get me wrong, this is a dark romance and Van is no good guy. Hell, he basically stalks the heroine in the beginning. But there’s also something much deeper to him that makes you fall for him. I adore Pam’s writing and this book shows you exactly why.

You may see this author pop up on a lot of my ultimate lists. Well that’s because the woman is a fucking rock star and can write the hell out of a book. She’s also the jack of all trades; rock stars, angst, and gritty as fuck MC are all part of her repertoire now. While I loved Kick, book 1 in her Savage Saint MC series, Tank was in a category of his own. This book was downright amazing. I can’t name any other author that can take a heroine that’s a drug addict and MC whore, and completely redeem her. Tank you will fall for right away, without a question. But when I hear she’ll be writing a dark romance, I knew I’d be all over it. What I didn’t know is how much this book will absolutely blow me away. If you haven’t read this yet, you need to. Book Title: Perfect Ruin
Series: Unyielding #2
Author: Nashoda Rose
Genre: Erotic Romance
Release Date: December 14, 2015
Hosted by: Book Enthusiast PromotionsGoodreads Button with ShadowPERFECT RUIN NASHODA ROSE AMAZON KINDLE EBOOK COVER

The New York Times Best Selling author Nashoda Rose is back with the much anticipated story of Kai and London in the Unyielding series.

Kai
There is nothing I care about.
No attachments.
No connections.
Outwardly, I’m a perfect gentleman.
Until my target sees my knife.
I fear nothing, not even death.
In my world, death is considered a privilege.
But my life comes with unbreakable cruel strings and
when I met her, I should’ve walked away.
I didn’t.
I was too selfish.
And that sealed her fate.
Because one week with me led her into the hands of ruin.

London
We all have unique layers that make up who we are.
What makes us vulnerable or strong.
What we fear and what excites us.
But peel back those layers and you’re left naked and exposed.
They did that to me.
Each piece was slowly stripped away then burned.
I merely existed.
But there was one layer they overlooked.
The most important of them all—the tie to one man.
The man responsible for me being this way.
The man who found me.
And the killer who would do anything to protect me.

Perfect Ruin is the dark erotic story of Kai and London.
Their beginning.
And the continuing story of Vault.

Must be read in order:

The farm made me numb to everything….
Until a girl weaved her way into my heart and made it beat again.

I’ve been waiting for Kai’s book for a long, long time. Ever since he was first introduced as a somewhat shady secondary character in Torn from You, I knew I wanted his story. See I happen to like the shady ones…and the fucked up ones…and the anti-heroes. You get where I’m going here. Basically, they more fucked up they are, the better. Kai was a character that was shrouded in mystery and wrapped in an enigma. You know that he may be the bad guy, but you can’t help yourself but wonder if there’s something more to him than seemingly meets the eye.

Emotionless.
Detached.
I’d slit the throats of men who had families. I’d destroyed lives. I’d been groomed to ruin and not care how I did it as long as the job was done.

Perfect Ruin is meant to be read after Perfect Chaos, and the story line runs parallel to the first half of the first Tear Asunder book, Torn from You. So if you haven’t read those two books yet, I highly suggest you do. But most importantly read Perfect Chaos as Perfect Ruin starts off immediately where it left of and there’s quite a few details mentioned in it that would help connect the dots here.

If you’ve read Tear Asunder and Perfect Chaos then you remember Raven; the girl with the lifeless eyes that has been to hell and back at the hands of evil. You got a taste of what she’s been through after Torn From You and after Perfect Chaos, you don’t know whether this is a girl that could possibly persevere or lead a normal life after what she’s lived through. Perfect Ruin takes you back to a time when Raven was still London; the daughter of a scientist that’s creating a drug for a shadowy organization and the woman that catches Kai’s eye before she becomes collateral damage…

I’m going to fuck you. And I want to hear you scream when you come and I won’t stop until you do…
And I can fuck you for a very long time.”

Kai is not a man that forms attachments. Any feeling has been beaten and tortured out of him when he was still a little boy. He doesn’t want an attachment of any kind any more than he can afford one. But when his job is to keep an eye on beautiful woman that he may have to use to bring her father to heel, it’s no hardship. What he never expects is for something to click inside of him once he does.

You can’t control it, so accept what this is for one more night. Forget that I’m a killer and I’ll try to forget that you’re a scientist.

It was only supposed to be a few stolen nights and nothing more. But when London is kidnapped by the organization Kai is attempting to bring down once and for all, he knows that he’ll stop at nothing to get her back. What begins is a story told over several years. While you don’t get to truly experience what London has been through as Raven at the hands of brutal men, it’s hinted on very heavily.

This is not Raven’s story, however. While you get her POV, the retelling of what happened in those years that she was kidnapped is more from Kai’s perspective. You get to truly find out the means that he went through to get her back and what it’s cost him. That fateful night that takes place in the first half of Torn From You, you get to experience from Kai’s POV.

Perfect Ruin is not an easy book to read. It’s a story of perseverance and survival. It’s brutal even while it’s not vivid.

Day by day a layer of me was peeled away and I was left raw and exposed. I never thought I’d ever choose to die. But I did.
But I didn’t die. So I existed.
I survived. And within the speck of dust, I had a speck of hope.

The connection between London and Kai is something that’s formed through many years. It may not be orthodox, but it’s them. Kai is not a gentle man, but with London there’s a part of him that comes to light that no one else has seen.
Perfect Ruin teaser-DGRI have to admit, I had my doubts about Raven being able to bounce back into any semblance of normal after everything that’s happened. I wasn’t even sure if that would be possible. Considering the shell of a girl that we see in Perfect Chaos, I was afraid that the transition would feel forced.

God, how did I sink so low? How did become a pathetic girl who had lost all dignity?
But my fairy tale had ended. Like a book thrown in the incinerator, pages of my life had been burned into ash then re-written into a girl called Raven.

But such is the genius of Nashoda Rose because she pulled that off perfectly. Her journey wasn’t a quick one, but it was a believable one. I loved seeing the lengths that Kai went to heal her without being overly coddling.

Nothing about us could end well, but time had never mattered before, and now there was a reason…because what I had with London was timeless. There wasn’t an end.

Perfect Ruin teaser3-DGRThere’s quite a lot that happened here and at times I found myself going back to Perfect Chaos and Torn From You to re-read a few things in order to refresh my memory. I’m actually very glad that I did, because there’s a few things that happen that I definitely would have overlooked the significance of.

Perfect Ruin is action packed, gritty, and erotic. It’s dark in a sense that the story is not an easy one to read, but not in a vivid visual sort of way. You get a rehash of what London has been through but not the actual experiences, which I was glad for because I don’t think I could have handled that.

Then there was Connor and talk about your FUBAR. Good god but that’s one broken man. After what happens at the end of this book, I’m not sure I’ll survive the wait for his book because OMG! I have a feeling his story will be the best one yet.

Release Week Blitz, Review & #Giveaway: ☆Vanquish☆ by Pam Godwin

Warning: Graphic sex and violence. Age 18+ only

It is recommended to read after Deliver, but it can be read as a stand-alone.

Her life is like a prison cell.
A self-made, to-hell-with-the-free-world existence that locks from the inside.
Stop judging. Her agoraphobia doesn’t define her. It simply keeps her safe.

He belongs in a prison cell.
The 6×8, make-me-your-bitch variety that locks from the outside.
But he’s free. To hunt. To take. To break.
And he just found a sexy new toy.

Capturing her is the easy part. Her fucked-up mind, however, makes him question everything he does next.

But he’s a determined bastard. If all goes his way, this will hurt like hell.

ExcerptHe stalked toward her, mirroring the tilt of her head, knees and shoulders loose, and his gaze holding her prisoner. A breath away, he paused, soaking in the subtleties of her tipped-up chin, parting lips, and glossy but resolute eyes.

With the next breath, he launched, hands on her jaw, fingers spread around the back of her head.

His elbows dropped, shoulders raised, and he yanked her to him, lifting her on tiptoes, guiding her mouth, taking it. His grip twisted through her hair as he drew in her upper lip and shoved her against the fridge, following her with the weight of his body.

The kiss went fucking wild, their lips mashing in a frantic battle. His tongue plunged her mouth, attacking, thrusting in and out, possessing her movements, owning her. Breath for breath, lick after lick, he ate at her mouth, tasting, devouring.

He dropped his hands to her breasts, squeezing ruthlessly as he rolled his cock against her cunt.

His tongue tingled, his skin burned, and his head swam. God, she was a drug, and he was so fucking high.

She gripped his biceps, bit at his lips, and threw her arms over his shoulders, her fingers scratching the fuck out his back. He shuddered, loving it, but he was in control.

Reaching back, he grabbed her wrists and slammed them above her head. Their bodies ground together, his forearms pressing hers to the fridge, their tongues dancing and clashing. Chest-to-chest, hips fused together, he flexed his ass, dry humping her like a horny teenager.

Jesus, fuck, he didn’t care. He wanted her.

He leaned back to study her face and found strong smoldering eyes, sharp breaths, and swollen wet lips. Whatever she saw in his expression made her mouth chase his and her fingers curl around his hands. They kissed endlessly, fueling the fire and pushing his control long past the point of discomfort before pulling back and starting all over again.

When he broke the kiss with a hand on her jaw, they panted as one, mouths open and so close their bottom lips brushed. She peered at him through lowered lashes, and he stared back in awe. What trembled between them wasn’t an if? Or even a how hard? Those were foregone. The question they shared was simple.

Review-DGR4.5 stars

He was a cold-hearted fuck with an appetite for blood, come, and tears. And he had the perfect girl to feed it.

Can you take a cold, sadistic, and practically nonredeemable hero and not only feel for him but completely fall for him by the end of the book?
YES

Can you take a heroine that’s so fucked up and insecure but make her come across as fierce and give her an inner core of strength that manages to shine through even during her darkest hours?
YES

Can you take a relationship that by all intents and purposes begins as something that should be a horror story but make you understand it, feel it, and completely turn it around into something brighter by the end of the story?
FUCK.YES.

For those of you that are curious if you can read this book if you haven’t read Deliver
YES

That’s exactly what I did. As much as I adore Pam Godwin’s writing, I knew based on some details I’d gleaned from the first book that it just wasn’t my cuppa, so I decided to pass on it. But when I saw the cover read the blurb for this book? I knew this was not a book I’d be passing up in a million years. See I have this thing for the anti-heroes and the assholes. As in, the more fucked up they are, the more I love them. Messed up? Maybe. But fuck me if Van didn’t fit my requirement to the T.

He was a kidnapper, a rapist, and she ached to be repulsed by him, just to prove she was sane, but she could’t. And she wasn’t. His scarred beauty radiated seduction and danger, a deadly combination.

Now most people would probably spend the first half of this book conflicted. You’ll want to hate Van for what he does, or maybe you WILL hate Van for everything he does. Me? I gobbled it up like the starved little pervert that I am.

From the very beginning the author gives you little tidbits of insight of who Van really is; his childhood, his past, his scars…both internal and external. As a matter of fact she gives you just enough to make you almost feel for him in the first half. I was afraid that his almost obsession with Liv would make it so that Amber would feel more like his consolation prize. But luckily that’s not at all how it was. As a matter of fact, I though the author pulled this off flawlessly.

Vanquish begins immediately where Deliver took off; Van being shot by Liv but surviving. But just because Liv has a new life now, doesn’t mean that Van has let her go. Stalking is what he does best, so that’s what he does. He lurks in the shadows, watching her house and her new life with her new boyfriend all while plotting on how to get close to her to get what he wants; information. In his stalking under the shadows of what he thinks is an abandoned house, he inadvertently stumbles onto the owner and who he decides will be his new victim, Amber.

Now Amber was a character I was afraid I would hate at first. How would I sum her up? Fucked the fuck up. That probably does it. Yep.

She’s agoraphobic, OCD, with an eating disorder and self esteem issues to boot. Bitch got issues is what I’m trying to tell you here. But beneath all her problems, she had this understated strength and an almost fierceness to her. Sounds strange doesn’t it? But it’s very true. And as the story progresses, more and more of her personality shines through and you simply can’t help but like her. Van was definitely not immune either

My mother named me Van Quiso. You’ll refer to me as Master.

The first half of this book is no light read. Van is one sadistic and cruel fuck, and that certainly doesn’t go away the second he lays eyes on Amber. While you may get small peeks into the damaged soul of a boy that lurks beneath the scary and cold exterior, he doesn’t exactly endear you with his actions toward Amber.

But that’s also the thing that I liked. Pam Godwin managed to take one fucked up hero and make his transition into someone more endearing and softer in a believable way. It didn’t happen in the blink of an eye, and I appreciated that because that would have completely killed the book for me. His road to redemption was a slow and painful one. Considering his background, history and parentage, I couldn’t envision this any other way.

His journey to redemption was slow, but believable and oh so satisfying when it came. The author truly makes you understand the damaged child beneath the cruel man. As much as you want to hate him for his actions, you can’t help but also feel for him at the same time. At least I know I did.

Fuck him, but he wanted to be her security, her anchor, her fucking everything. Not as her captor but as her lover.

I absolutely loved the epilogue. What a perfect way to end the book. If you’re a fan of dark romance, this is not to be missed.

I can’t stop thinking that maybe two negatives might equal a positive.

I have loved all books by Kele Moon, but her Battered Hearts series was a favorite of mine. So when I saw she was releasing a spin-off series with her Untamed Hearts series, I was just a little excited. And by that I mean I e-stalked the fuck out of the poor author for any and all tidbits about the book and jumped at the chance to read the ARC.

If you’ve read and enjoyed the Battered Hearts series, you will absolutely love this one. And if you haven’t yet discovered the amazing talent that is Kele Moon and her delicious MMA heroes? I’m not sure why you’re still reading my review and not one-clicking these badboys.

One fateful night brings two strangers crashing together irrevocably changing both of their lives.

Katie Foster is a good girl. A high school teacher. A divorcee. And someone that’s played it safe all her life. So when a mysterious stranger with haunting light gray eyes rescues her from a car crash, she can’t seem to get him out of his mind. That night changes her, causes her to take more risks and truly experience life for the first time in her life. And that includes the tempting stranger that continues to be the recurring fantasy in all her dreams and waking minutes.

Marcos Rivera is a fighter, an ex-convict, a gangbanger, and a thief. He’s also someone that lived a hard life and knows that there’s no sunshine or a sweet woman in his near future; just dirt or prison bars. Even knowing all this, Katie Foster continues to be a temptation that he just can’t resist. If only for a little bit, he wants to know what it would be like to be a woman like her. Someone pure, someone sweet, and oh so tempting.

They may be from 2 different worlds and they may be as different as night and day, but that doesn’t stop the scorching hot chemistry that brews between them.

While the romance between Katie and Marcos takes center stage in this book there are a lot of other things going on as well. I thought Kele Moon did a flawless job weaving everything together in one amazing book. She also managed to write two incredibly endearing characters with Katie and Marcos. I simply adored Marcos. I can’t say enough about him. He absolutely stole my heart and at the same time had my heart breaking for him. The connection between Marcos and Katie may have been more on the instant side, but you can truly understands what draws them together. And the sex scenes? Off the charts hot.

What I loved the most is that it wasn’t just a romance, it was also so much more. While I loved Marcos, what was even better was that extra peak into Chuito. Oh. My. GAWD. Chuito. I cannot wait for his book.

I don’t want to tell you much more since it would simply spoil the book and experience for you. Read it for yourself and find out. But be prepared for some swooning and panting, because Marcos REALLY doesn’t play around. The man is deliciously devious between the sheets.

Watching a hot girl come was his drug of choice. When other guys his age were sinking into drugs or alcohol, he was sneaking into girls’ bedrooms and going down on them.

Any questions? Right then. Didn’t think so 😉

I couldn’t get enough. While all the characters from the previous books make an appearance here, I was especially happy to get more of Tino and Nova. Italian mafia bad boys? Sign me up for that! (Especially Nova)

And if you’re wondering if you can read this book without previously reading the other series, absolutely. The author gives you plenty of detail about previous characters to allow you to not miss a beat, without making it sound redundant for those that have read it.

And if you’re wondering if the book lives up to this amazingly HAWT cover?
