Alleskelle : I love the banter you have on between the girls in Licked. And the heroine? I swear it was like hearing Lana talking to me! It was really strange

Brooke Blaine : Ahaha I love that you can relate!

Geri : I love books that showcases women relationships

Brooke Blaine : That’s really the heart of the story. Friendships are so important, to me more so than the romance. Honestly, I could write about them without the men and be so happy with it. That’s not done enough, celebrating women

Brooke Blaine : What I’ll tell you is that I’m digging a bit deeper for this next one. I love romcom and I loved the suspense, but I sort of back off from being too vulnerable in my books. I’m that way in real life too, and I just feel that need to sort of let things out. Does that make sense? Keep you salivating and all that 😉

Let’s talk second chance love and all the reasons why this particular read loves it…

Angst? Check! a grovel oftentimes being one of the best I’ll read? Double check!

There’s plenty of reasons I love this particular trope, but not all second chance romances are cut from the same cloth. Some are swoony, some are rip your hair out angsty. Luckily, I’ve been able to compile (what I think) is a balanced combination of both! As always, the books on this list are those that I have personally read and loved. But if you like uber alphas and super hot sex with dirty talk galore all wrapped around a second chance romance I’m not sure why you haven’t read this book yet!

LOVELY TRIGGER by R.K. Lilley

Sweet mother of angst! I have no freaking idea how I survived this trilogy with even half my sanity intact…. or did I? *babbles incoherently*

But seriously though, it’s not often that a trilogy manages to suck me in as much as this one had. My book ADD typically kicks in right around book two with a major case of feeling-like-book-filleritis. But something about this one just worked for me. The angst, the hate, the lies, all of it built up into this amazing conclusion of one hell of a second chance romance! If you haven’t met Tristan and Danika yet, you’re in for one hell of a ride!

A HUSBAND’S REGRET by Natasha Anders

Revenge, they said was a dish best served cold. He’d been waiting for two years. And how much sweeter the payback would be no that he had her very firmly within his grasp.

OK, so this is not your typical second chance romance because the hero isn’t exactly groveling back right away. Let’s just say there are some assumptions and he wants revenge on his wife that he kicked out two years ago. But when he finally understands the enormity of his mistake? Second chance grovel goodness!

BELONG TO ME by Shayla Black

NO CHANCE by Christy Reece

If you’re a fan of steamy romantic suspense, you need to read Christy’s Last Chance Rescue series. No Chance is book 4 in the series, but it’s easily read as a standalone. I highly recommend reading the entire series because I loved it!

Don’t expect Maya’s typical erotic romance with this, because this was more mild on that scale. But boy the feels of it all!

NOW AND THEN by Mira Lyn Kelly

There was something primal about the way he felt with her. It was unreasonable. Irrational. And he didn’t fucking care, because that feeling was so good, the only thing that mattered was making sure he got more.

Does the title not give it away? Because it totally should! If you haven’t read the fun and steamy Dare to Love series by Mira Lyn Kelly, then get yourself some. The book before this one was a great friends-to-lovers! And each book is easily read as a standalone.

There’s one author that’s given me plenty of favorite second chance romances and that’s Kristen Ashley. I should really just dedicate a list just for her…

GOLDEN TRAIL by Kristen Ashley

This has to be one of my favorite books by this author to date. While it’s book 3 in her Until series, it’s also easily read as a standalone. Nothing like those Mayson brothers and their Boom. If you want a good dose of sexy alpha, this is a go-to.

The heroine is older, and trapped in a loveless marriage. The hero is just 17 at the time. Their love story truly takes off in the second book which takes place ten years later. This was the book that first made me fall in love with this incredibly talented author.

NO REVERSE and FAST FORWARD by Marion Croslydon

Cassie used to make me feel. She also used to keep me from thinking straight. Some things didn’t change.

This is a duet about love, second chances and forgiveness. It’s more emotional than steamy with a healthy amount of angst thrown in.

This was my chance- our chance- to make things right. I’d made a promise to Cass and damn it all to hell, I’d never break it.

Book 3 in the series, You Turn, is another great second chance romance with a different character that was first introduced in the duet. I highly recommend that one as well.

If you follow my reviews you already know I’m obsessed with all things J. Daniels and her Alabama Summer series just so happens to be one of my favorites. While Luke and Reed from When I Fall are my top 2 favorite heroes she’s written, there’s just something about Luke that makes him my number one. Maybe it’s the addition of hate/lust in this book in addition to the second chance romance? Whatever the reason is, this book and this series are an absolute must read!

CROSSING THE LINE by Kele Moon

Every story had an innocent beginning, even theirs, and Tabitha found herself wishing she had a chance to go back and relive it one more time, because she didn’t want to let go any more than Wyatt did.

Speaking of authors I’m obsessed with, Kele Moon is at the tippy top of that particular list. I stalk the loving hell out of the poor woman and she still puts up with me. She’s a saint on top of an incredibly talented author, clearly. But I digress…

Crossing The Line is book 3 in her Battered Hearts series, and while you technically could enjoy it as a standalone, I highly recommend reading this amazing series in order…and quickly following that up with her Untamed Hearts series (anti-heroes FTW). CTL was an incredibly emotional and erotic second chance story and to this day continues to be one of my all time favorites.

LOVE AND LET DIE by Lexi Blake

He was going to kill her. He was going to wrap his hands around her pretty throat and squeeze. Except the minute he had the vision of killing his back-from-the-dead wife, she was suddenly naked and he wasn’t thinking about throttling her anymore. Maybe he could fuck her to death. That would be a better way to go.

Since we’re on the subject of series/authors I’m obsessed with, we need to talk about Lexi Blake and her Masters & Mercenaries series because OMG! I lurve this series so freaking hard, it’s not even funny. Now this is definitely a series I highly recommend reading in order because while each book is a different couple, at times there’s a plot arc that continues through several books. Love and Let Die centers on my favorite Dom and his reunion with the wife he thought was long dead and still mourning. Oh yeah. It IS as good as it sounds!

BLIND FAITH by Rebecca Zanetti

Blind Faith is book three in Rebecca’s Sin Brothers series and easily my favorite since…second chance and everything. Nate reunites with the one woman he gave his heart too that also happens to be the daughter of his mortal enemy.

Based on a band of brothers who carry unnatural powers genetically engineered into them by a black ops military unit, the series has a little PNR twist to it, but mainly it’s pulse pounding romantic suspense. I recommend reading these books in order for maximum effect 😉

THIN LOVE by Eden Butler

Sweet mother of angst! The angst! All of the angst! It hurt so good. If you want a book that will rip the heart out of your chest through your throat and then slowly put it back together, this is the book you NEED to read. Man on man but I loved it. It’s told it two parts; the first being when the H/h meet and fall in love when they’re younger and the story of what leads to the falling apart of their relationship, and the second part is their reunion. Both parts are equally amazing and if you read one book from my list, this should be at the very top!

HARDER by Robin York

Speaking of angst….this book got it. In spades! Holy shit but it has it! And it’s utterly delicious. This is book two in a duet and must be read after DEEPER.

POWER PLAY by Mallery Malone

THIS HEART OF MINE by Brenda Novak

This book had everything; the feels and the swoons. And one of the most unforgettable stories of redemption I’ve ever read.

TAKING FIRE by Cindy Gerard

Romantic suspense with a sexy hero and an amazing kick-ass heroine? Oh yeah! This book definitely had it! It was also a wonderful second chance romance as well. The hero first meets the heroine on a mission overseas and they share one steamy night between the sheets…only for him to wake up the next day and realize her betrayal. Now six years later, love throws them together again with one hell of an explosion…both literally and physically!

If you haven’t read any books by this author, you’re seriously missing out. Taking Fire is book four in her One Eyed Jacks series, but also easily read as a standalone.

Easily one of my favorite second chance romances I’ve read to date. Period.

There’s this need inside me that I can’t fight-the need to stay close to her. It’s as if somehow she snuck over that wall I’ve spent my whole life building so high and is getting inside of me.

I’m a huge Kim Karr fan. When she releases a new book, I jump on it, no second thoughts. So when I saw the blurb and cover for this pretty, suffice it to say I was utterly giddy with excitement to get my grubby little hands on it! What? I’m a cover whore, mkay! And that, my friends, is one lick worthy cover. Add into that the fact that the blurb made this sound too delicious to pass up, and it was a no brainer!

Was it everything I thought? Well…not quite. But it was a heck of a start.

Jasper is a character I was intrigued by right away. What can I say? I have a weakness for those manwhores, and Jasper is no angel in that respect. He drives fast, he fucks fast, and he moves on from his one night stands even faster. But the one woman that threatens his cool resolve is the one that brings up every dark memory of his past.

Charlotte Lane once saw Jasper as her everything. They were the best of friends until everything changed. Now she’s back in the town she grew up in hoping to unravel the secrets that still continue to haunt her. But Jasper is not exactly happy to see her and their secrets just may be more than either of them could handle.

As much as I wanted to love this book, I found myself struggling with certain parts. Jasper ran hot and cold way too much with Charlie. On the one hand, I could understand it given their past. On the other, he was always so quick to jump to the worst conclusion of her and treat her like dirt in the process. Charlie’s quiet understanding of this treatment certainly didn’t help matters. I wanted her to show a bit of backbone, but it was almost like she was determined to play the martyr and it didn’t always work.

Their relationship is a slow burn, which I definitely enjoyed. There’s nothing better than that delicious burn of built up sexual tension, and these two had it in spades. But their relationship did sometimes take the back burner to the mystery and secrets unraveling throughout the story. The murder mystery and the secrets unraveling is what had me turning the pages with fervor. The suspense was thick and I was hungry for any crumb of information that would help me wrap my mind around what was going on.

Set The Pace was not quite what I expected in terms of romance. I really found the romance to take the backseat to the suspense and mystery here, but then again, that’s not necessarily a bad thing. As for the ending? Holy mother of all cliffhangers! I wanted to rip my hair out and then stalk down Kim and demand she give me the next book immediately! Oh my god it was PAINFUL! I can’t wait to see how everything unfolds with the conclusion because the set up is delicious as hell!

While slower paced than I had expected and the heroine was not my typical preference, I still enjoyed this one. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to stalk the author incessantly for news on the release of book 2.

January—11 years earlier…

ISADORA HURRIED DOWN the stark, white corridor and kept her eyes on the floor. She couldn’t believe how close she’d cut her latest feed. Alasdair would have her hide if he had to bail her out, but it wasn’t her fault. Not really.

Not one human had caught her eye in the latest batch of yieldings, and that was saying something considering she wasn’t partial to male or female like her cousins. Ugh, it was a slump. Thanos had warned her that it would eventually happen. She hadn’t believed him, though, and with Diomêdês out of town, her options were limited.

She’d been restless lately, which was unlike her, and tonight, she hadn’t been able to wait. The local hospital seemed a smart place to peruse a decent selection. That was until the damn patient had coded.

Just my luck, she thought, and when the first doctor had arrived, she’d promptly knocked him out, stolen his lab coat, and shoved him in the bathroom. Then a rush of hospital staff had shown up and she’d had no choice but to leave by foot. That had been…oh, about five minutes ago.

While shoving her hands in the deep pockets, she came up to the entry she’d walked through earlier and sighed. All she had to do was get out into the shadows and fade back to the lair without anyone seeing. Alasdair would be none the wiser.

As she turned the final corner, a smug grin crossed her lips—until she ran smack into the equivalent of a brick wall.

“Oh, shit. I mean—” The male standing opposite her placed a hand on her arm. “I’m so sorry. I didn’t see you until it was too late to stop the collision.” He chuckled, and the warm sound of the vibration had Isadora raising her eyes.

As he absently ran his palm down the sleeve of her coat, she barely felt the touch. He was unlike any she’d ever seen.

The first thing she noticed was his height. Being a tall female herself, she’d always been drawn to a man who surpassed her own stature, and this man had several inches on her. His hair, dark as her own, was swept back from his face as though he’d run his hands through it. It was the odd color of his eyes, though, that held her immobile. They were an unusual shade of…silver that reminded her of her Ancient’s hair, and right now, they seemed to be shining at her.

“Are you okay?” he asked, bending a little at the knees to get a better look at her.

She quickly lowered her head. Jesus. Talk, Isadora. Tell him you’re fine and get away from him. “I think I’ll survive.” No, no. Do not flirt with him.

“Well, thank god for that.”

Brilliant, she admonished herself. His tone had taken on a quality she knew all too well—interest. But she didn’t have time for this. She made a move to step around him, but the fingers she hadn’t even realized were still on her wrist tightened.

“Wait…”

She looked down to where he held her, and as if he’d just noticed, he released his grip.

“Yes?”

He gave a shrug, but the cocky smile that tipped his lips belied any kind of indifference. This man was confident, and he had every reason to be.

“You can’t just leave. What if I injured you?”

A burst of laughter bubbled out of her at the notion, and it was the first time in years she had done so.

“I’m serious,” he said as he took a step closer.

She brought her fingers to her lips to hide the grin she was flashing. “Yes, I can see that.”

“I mean, what if you leave and later suffer from a concussion? I’m a pretty solid guy, and you did run into me rather hard.”

As he said the word hard, their eyes locked and Isadora’s arm lowered, her lips parting. She needed to get out of there. The high from the feed and her lack of yieldings these past few weeks must’ve been causing a residual sexual pull, because all she wanted was to get naked and on her knees for this guy.

As a group of hospital staff ran by, he broke their connection and gestured with his thumb over his shoulder. “Do you need to go?”

Yes, but not because of that. “I should.”

“Are you a doctor here?”

“Ahh no. An intern.” Great, now I’m lying. And why that lie?

“Oh, so, if I come back, I might bump into you again?”

That was why right there. “Uh, maybe.”

When it was clear she wasn’t going to say anything else, he held his hand out for her to shake. It was such a human gesture and odd in light of their having already connected so spectacularly that she just stared at it.

“Then let me introduce myself so it won’t be strange when I show up again tomorrow. I’m Elias, and you are?”

As Isadora slid her palm into his, she allowed herself to take another good look at him. He was sexy, and the way he was watching her with intense focus made it more than obvious he found her just as appealing. Surely there’d be no harm if she took a little peek inside.

She gently pushed into his mind, and what she saw was anything but endearing or shy. He was imagining her as stripped down as she had just been picturing. However, he had her on her feet and against a wall—the hospital wall behind her, to be exact.

Loving that image, she was more than content to keep watching, but as if he knew she was in there, his mind went blank. She blinked, not believing what she was seeing, but sure enough, it was as if he’d flicked a switch and the television had been shut off.

“You’re not going to tell me your name?” he asked, breaking into her thoughts and flashing a wide grin.

She wasn’t sure why, but instead of compelling him to forget her, she slicked her tongue along her lower lip and watched him track it with those unusual eyes.

“I’ll tell you that the next time we bump into each other.”

“Which will be?”

Diomêdês would be gone for several more days, so perhaps she could amuse herself with this human until he returned. Then maybe…maybe she would present him as her next choice if things went well.

“I work tomorrow night.”

It should’ve alarmed her at how easily lies fell from her tongue, but she’d honed the perfect delivery of such tales over many centuries and found she really was quite skilled at it. Thanos, her cousin, was terrible.

“That’s good to know. I’ll be sure to stand in every corridor until you run into me.”

Isadora walked backwards, once again slipping her hands into the coat pockets, and winked. “I should pass by this one around midnight.”

As she turned to push through the exit, he called out, “I’ll be waiting…”

My my, Ella Frank, what a twisted tale you weave. The Masters Among Monsters series continues with Isadora, and all the puzzle pieces from the previous books begin to slowly put themselves together. But while you get answers to some things, you’re left with plenty more questions.

Truth be told, I struggled with my rating for a bit. Do I rate this for what it was or what I thought it would be? But Ella Frank has never been conventional, and she’s not one to be put in a box. This series proves exactly that. The woman is a chameleon of genres and her sinfully sexy writing style is sure to hook any reader. Her Masters Among Monsters series, however, is unlike anything I’ve read, not only by her, but anyone. Yes, it’s PNR, but if you’re expecting traditional romance, don’t hold your breath. MAM is sure to break some molds just like the characters within it.

I do not wish to break you. I wish to fuck you.”

If you’re thinking that each book is a only a romance for each character that’s named on it, think again. It’s so much more than that and it’s certainly not meant to be read as standalones.

Isadora and Elias clearly have a history together, yet after the events of the previous book, it’s clear that they are on opposite ends of what looks to be an upcoming war between the vampires and an entity that is still unknown. Who is Elias? Who is Leonidas? And who is the newcomer, Paris? Isadora delves into the history of how Isadora came to be turned; Deomedes, the ancient that saved her when he turned her; and her current situation with Elias Fontana. Each one of these characters has a POV. Not only that, but a large part of the book is still dedicated to the story of Leo, Alasdair and Vasilios. In addition to all these POVs, we also get one for Paris, Eton, and a little taste of Thanos.

I wasn’t expecting quite so many POVs, and I had also expected Isadora to be more focused on the romance aspect between Isadora and Elias. But this book is so much more than that. Ella has taken the big picture and broke it up into three parts. Each book offers another piece of the puzzle, but it’s impossible to do so without continuing what began in the first one. So while this has the addition of more history on Isadora, it’s also very much a continuance for the rest of the characters. It’s not cut and dry and it’s anything but black and white. It’s sensual and delicious world building along with an incredibly erotic romance that’s anything but ordinary. Is there really any wonder why this author continues to be an auto-buy for me?

While the book ends in as good a place as it can, all things considered, it’s clear there’s much more to come. And I for one cannot wait to see how everything concludes.

DGR Favorite Picks of 2015

The year 2015 has been extra good to me. I’ve discovered some new to me authors and reconnected with some past favorites. I’ve had amazing reads in every category, and considering how eclectic my reading tastes are, that’s a lot of categories. Even with as picky as I tend to be with my favorites, it was still tough to choose and narrow these down for you guys. So really, it came down to my extra EXTRA favorites. The 5 star reads that I will blindly recommend to anyone. The reads that blew me away and stayed with me for the entire year. Those books that I still think back to and compare others to.

I’m doing things a bit different this year, though. I’ll break it down into two parts; first part will be my favorites uncategorized, and the second I’ll give you with my favorite in particular categories. Make sense? It will once you read it, I promise 😉

This book. I can’t even. No really, I really can’t even. This book broke my cold black heart. The mother of all plot twists comes at you like a damn two by four and hits you like a mac truck. Holy shit! I’m obsessed with this Lexi’s Masters and Mercenaries series, and they seem to just get better and better with each new book. But Master No? It was in a category all of its own. Espionage, BDSM, suspense and a story that will suck you right in are just some of the reasons I recommend this series. And I highly recommend reading the books in order to enjoy them to their fullest.

This was my first book by this author and I was absolutely blown away. This Heart of Mine was a highly emotional second romance and redemption. It wasn’t filled with gratuitous sex scenes, and it didn’t need them because the story and romance were so amazing. This was so different form anything I’ve read this year and I still think about it all these months later. While it’s book 8 in the series, it’s easily read as a standalone.

THE SLAYER by Kele Moon

Hands down bar none, my favorite book I’ve read this year. If you haven’t read anything by this incredible author yet, you’re seriously missing out. And if there’s one thing I can promise you, it’s that you will be a huge fan after reading this book. Though I highly recommend reading the series in order and starting with The Viper first. I also recommend reading Crossing The Line as well since you get more of Chuito in that book as well. Kele’s Untamed Hearts is her spin-off series from her Battered Hearts series. It’s gritty and sexy tale of a more anti-hero kind of alpha. As much as I loved all her other books, there’s no doubt in my mind that The Slayer was her best yet and I can’t recommend it enough. A must read if there ever was one!

DGR’s Ultimate List of Anti-Heroes

If you know me or read my reviews then you already know I tend to have a type of book I gravitate to: the gritty and fucked up sort. It’s no secret that I love an alphahole, but what I love even more is the anti-hero. The baddie that you just can’t help but love, and you do end up loving them. Hard. He may hero that may be inherently good but does bad things. Or he may be downright bad, but there will be a woman out there that is just perfect for him. Or he may be something of a cross between those two. Whatever or whoever he is, it’s pretty much guaranteed that I will be shaking in pervy glee to be reading about them. Does that make me slightly screwed up? Nah. Just makes for one kick-ass read. Though the years I’ve read my fair share of anti-heroes, but the ones I’m about to list below are my ultimate favorites. They’re the ones I recommend blindly whenever someone asks me for a rec. You’ll notice I’m going to be spotlighting my very favorites, and below I will also give you a few other worth mentioning. That’s not to say I didn’t love those books either, I loved each book on this list. But the ones spotlighted are hands down, bar none, some of my very favorites.

So let’s get right into it, shall we?

THE DARK DUET by CJ Roberts

What kind of list would this be without the book that first began my obsession? Caleb was the anti-hero that first popped my cherry, and damn what an anti-hero to start with. This man is utterly FUBAR. If you’ve read this series, you know exactly what I mean. And if you haven’t? Umm…I’m fairly certain you must have been living under a rock somewhere. No joke. Climb on out of there and come join us on the dark side. We have cookies. Or is it cockies? I get confused…

In the Company of Killers by J.A. Redmerski

In the theme of going by reading order, let’s talk about Victor Faust. When I first read Killing Sarai, I wasn’t sure what I was getting into. All I knew is that I read and loved The Edge of Never and then went, “Oh look! A new book by J.A.!” Boy did I step into it… LOL! Here I went from angsty NA to gritty romantic suspense. As far as dark books, this one barely bleeps on the scale. It’s more thriller and suspense, but Victor is all baddie. A contract killer and a girl that’s desperate to escape nine years of captivity. This book was AMAZING! I haven’t read past the second in this series, but I hear they’re just as good as the first! Reviving Izabel is the continuation of book 1, but the rest are different characters.

Zeth fucking Mayfair. Does he even need an introduction? If you haven’t read this series yet, prepare yourself for a binge. They’re impossible not to read back to back. The story of Zeth and Sloane is gritty and so erotic, you may need to keep some ice on standby for your ovaries.

And you need to check out Callie’s spin off series, DEAD MAN’S INK. Rebel is another favorite of mine, though slightly different from Zeth he’s still just as much of a badass. The series focuses on the Widow Maker’s MC of which Rebel is the President and the heroine is Sloane’s sister, Sophia.

Consequences series by Aleatha Romig

Mr. Anthony Rawlings. The man who pretty much guaranteed that you will never look at a cocktail napkin the same again. The man who fucked with your head almost as much as he did with Claire’s. If you’re looking for a mindfuck and a half, this is a series that you need to read…and probably be rolled straight to your local loony bin. Not even kidding.

UNFINISHED HEROES series by Kristen Ashley

It’s impossible for me to pick a favorite in this series, so I won’t. I’ll just tell you about the one that started it all. Knight “Daddy” Sebring. Le sigh. Now I have a love hate relationship with this book. I loved the story to pieces, but the daddy thing downright creeped me out. Yeah. I’m one of those perverts with some limits apparently and the daddy thing is that one limit. BUT if you can overlook that, the story is absolutely amazing and so is the entire series. I was lucky enough to read an advanced reader’s copy of Sebring and I can tell you it’s just as good if not the best in the series. These are milder on the dark and gritty scale. The heroes in these books are inherently good men that just happen to do some bad things but for good reason. If you haven’t read these yet, they’re currently on sale for only $1.99 in anticipation of the release of Sebring on January 11.

DESTROYED by Pepper Winters

This was my first Pepper Winters book and it absolutely blew me away. I ugly cried myself through the ending and couldn’t stop thinking about it for days after. Having read all of Pepper’s books since then, I can definitely tell you that on Pepper’s particular scale of dark, this is gray. But in its own right? It’s not easy read. It was gritty and emotional but yet wonderful all at once. An underground fighter and the woman who wants to heal him and yet they heal each other. *dreamy sigh*

Have you ever wondered what would happen if Captive in the Dark and Dexter had a love child? This fucking book is what! My. God. Do you like a dark romance with a redeemable hero that slowly succumbs to his inevitable love for the heroine? Perhaps an anti-hero that has what you’d like to think is a semblance of a conscience? Well fuck that and your delicate sensibilities! Because you sure as fuck won’t find it here! DOn’t say I didn’t warn you. This book is fucked the fuck up. I’m not even kidding. But it’s also seeeeew gewd. Like ridiculously addicting good. Oh and it also ends on a motherfucker of a cliffhanger, so…yeah. I’ve been stalking Francette for news on book two and she’s working in it but there’s no definitive release date just yet.

PRISONER by Annika Martin & Skye Warren

This book had one of the most intense first meetings I have ever read. Period. It may have had something to do with the hero being led down the prison hall as an inmate when it happened? Yeah. That could have been it. But really, this is probably my favorite Skye Warren book I’ve read to date. It’s gritty, sexy and completely unputdownable. While part of a series, each book will be a different character and this one had a fully finished HEA. I’m absolutely salivating for any news that these authors will be writing more in this series but so far nothing. So I’ll just be in my corner…rocking and crying.

KING by T.M. Frazier

I have yet to read a book by this author that I haven’t devoured in one sitting. This woman knows how to write one dark and utterly fucked up romance. King and Doe’s story was no light read but man was it delicious. Their story spans over two books; King and Tyrant. We now also got Bear’s book in Lawless and I’m eagerly anticipating the continuation of that with Soulless.

MONSTERS IN THE DARK by Pepper Winters

So no surprise that Pepper Winters heroes make numerous appearances on my list. But there’s just something about Q from Monsters in the Dark that never left me. Quintessentially Q gutted me. That book touched me on a visceral level and I still think about it to this day. One of the best dark romances I’ve read to date and one of my favorite couples. Simply unforgettable. If you haven’t met Tess and Q yet, you haven’t lived.

Now here’s a baddie for you. Vanquish is book 2 in Pam’s Deliver series but you can also read it as a standalone. Van was first introduced in Deliver and he was ALL bad. This was a straight up villain. And yet, when you took a deeper look, you’d notice something just below his surface. Something…vulnerable. Now don’t get me wrong, this is a dark romance and Van is no good guy. Hell, he basically stalks the heroine in the beginning. But there’s also something much deeper to him that makes you fall for him. I adore Pam’s writing and this book shows you exactly why.

You know the phrase “uncomfortably aroused”? You will after reading this book. I guaran-fucking-tee it. Sweet baby jesus and all that’s holy, I don’t know how and if my ovaries survived this book. It’s taboo, gritty, and so freaking hot, you’d be surprised that your kindle doesn’t burn in flames. And if you haven’t read it, I don’t even want to talk to you until you do. That’s it. Run along now and don’t come back until you’ve read it.

SAVAGE SAINT MC series by Carmen Jenner

You may see this author pop up on a lot of my ultimate lists. Well that’s because the woman is a fucking rock star and can write the hell out of a book. She’s also the jack of all trades; rock stars, angst, and gritty as fuck MC are all part of her repertoire now. While I loved Kick, book 1 in her Savage Saint MC series, Tank was in a category of his own. This book was downright amazing. I can’t name any other author that can take a heroine that’s a drug addict and MC whore, and completely redeem her. Tank you will fall for right away, without a question. His and Ivy’s journey isn’t an easy one or filled with rainbows and unicorns, but it’s completely unforgettable.

They’re full length novels, so this is definitely one lengthy serial. But you’ll be gobbling it up like the crack that it is. That I promise you.

RICOCHET by Keri Lake

Oh man, this book. Easily one of my top 3 books I’ve read this year. I love Keri Lake’s writing and I’ve been a huge fan of her PNR series, Sons of Wrath. But when I hear she’ll be writing a dark romance, I knew I’d be all over it. What I didn’t know is how much this book will absolutely blow me away. If you haven’t read this yet, you need to. Ricochet is what would happen if The Punisher and V for Vendetta had a love child. This is a must read. Period.

Ricochet is a standalone, but a book focusing on different characters set in the same world will be releasing next year; Backfire.

“So what did you mean, you don’t want to talk about it?,” Tony Moretti repeated, glancing down at Anthony’s plate, and scowling to see the bacon supply completely depleted.Anthony scooped a mouthful of Swiss cheese omelet into his mouth before sitting back and reaching for his coffee. “It means that Ma doesn’t like cop-talk at the table.”

It had been a long time since he’d been the one in the hot seat, and he wasn’t at all sure that he cared for it.

Scratch that. He was sure.

He hated it.

But his father could be like a dog with a bone when it came to his sons’ careers. And today, like it or not, it was Anthony under the microscope.

He surrendered to the inevitable.

“Dad. I told you. It’ll get handled.” He went for another cup of coffee, only to find it was empty. Diner fail.

He scanned the dining room for the waitress, partially because he wanted more coffee, partially because he wanted a distraction. Partially because—

“You’ve been saying it’lls getbe handled for weeks,” Tony said, refusing to let the matter drop.

“Yeah, Captain. You’ve been saying that for weeks.” This from Anthony’s other brother Vincent. Two years younger than Anth, Vin was a homicide detective and the most irritable and irreverent member of the family. And the one least likely to kiss Anth’s ass.

If Anthony was totally honest, he was pretty sure that most of his younger siblings respected him, not only because he was the highest- ranking active family member, but simply because he was the oldest. He was the one they’d come to when they needed to hide that broken vase from Mom, or when they were scared to death to tell Dad about that D in Cchemistry, or in the case of his brothers, when it was time to learn their way around the female anatomy.

But Vincent had authority issues and was always the first to jump at the chance to gently mock Anthony’s status as Captain.

A title that had been hard -earned, and still felt new. As though it could be ripped away at any time.

Which was exactly the reason his father was on his ass right now. Anthony had passed his Ccaptain’s test three months ago, and his father had every intention of him climbing the ladder all the way to the top. The very top.

It was a path Anth had never questioned. A path that, up until recently, had been remarkably smooth.

And then…

And then Smiley had happened.

His eyes were wild as they looked down on her, and the last thought Maggie had before his mouth slammed against hers was that Anthony Moretti completely out of control was the sexiest thing she’d ever seen.

I have a rule when it comes to Lauren Layne books: she writes them, I read them. Period. It doesn’t matter what she writes, because each and every time I know I’ll be in for a treat. Her New York’s Finest series has quickly made its way onto my favorites list as well. I loved Frisk Me, and after the little peek that we got at the end of it into Anthony Moretti, I couldn’t wait to see what the police Captain will bring.

The character that immediately caught my attention was the middle Moretti, Vincent. What can I say? I love the broody grumpy assholes, and Vincent sure fits the bill. What I didn’t expect was for Anthony to give him a run for his money. The newly promoted Captain has no interest in relationships ever since a tragedy changed his outlook on mixing his career aspirations with a woman. He knows the two will never mix and he doesn’t even want to try. So what if the beautiful waitress at the diner his family frequents instantly catches his eyes. It helps that she can’t seem to help but dump food on him each time she sees him, bringing out his temper and loosing his filter so he can’t help but be a grade a asshole.

Maggie Walker has dreams, and a waitress at a diner isn’t it. But it pays the bills while she tries to make her dream of becoming an author come true. Having left everything behind to move to NY, she’s starting over fresh. In her tiny apartment, with her adorable dog, she doesn’t mind that it may not be the lap of luxury, because for once in her life it’s all hers. But she can barely seem to do her job when the intimidating Captain Moretti seems to bring out her inner klutz. But when she just may be the witness to help him with a career making case, Anthony has no choice but to get to know the little waitress better. And that’s when things get interesting…

He pulled back, just slightly, his breath hot and heavy against her face. “Say you want this.”

I loved Maggie’s sweet but sassy personality. At first I thought she’d be another introverted little mouse, but she really grew into her own as the book progressed. Anthony was the epitome of an a-hole for much of the book, which is actually, what ultimately brought my rating down slightly. It took him a bit too long for my taste to finally remove his head from his ass. And let me tell you, when it came to relationships, it was very firmly planted up there. You have to know it’s bad when Vincent was giving him relationship advice.

The chemistry between Maggie and Anth was scorching. What I love about Lauren Layne, is nothing is instant. No insta-love or insta-lust to be found here. She really makes it stretch and burn, and it makes it that much more delicious when the sparks finally ignite. So as frustrating as Anthony was for me at times, it took barely anything away from the book. I enjoyed it thoroughly and can’t wait until the next one….ESPECIALLY after that sneak peek at the end.
