Review: ☆On The Way Home☆ by Skye Warren

On the Way Home
Clint

For eight months I’ve been deep under cover as a special operator in the Army. On the plane ride home, all I want is a hot shower and a long sleep. But a Dear John text message leaves me stranded. I need a ride and a place to stay, and the pretty stewardess is more than willing.

Della

It’s supposed to be a simple trade—the passenger in seat 34B for my sister. But the sexy soldier is more than I can handle in all the best ways. He trusts me, but I can’t save him. No one can. Sometimes trouble has a way of following you home.

On the Way Home is a dark new adult romance intended for readers over eighteen.

Monsters came in all shapes and sizes. They wore custom designer suits and stewardess uniforms. They gave you a job as a stripper or went down on you to help you sleep, but those were just part of the lure. Because when you had learned to trust the monster, when you let your guard down, that’s when you got eaten.

This was my first book by Skye Warren, so I really wasn’t sure exactly what I would be going into. All I knew is that when I read that blurb, I knew I had to read this book. I’m a big fan of Dark Romance, and this sounded EXACTLY up my alley. Was it everything I thought it would be? Well….almost. Firstly, I can’t really say it was all that dark. It was more gritty. That’s not a bad thing at all, but still worth a mention.

Clint is returning home after 8 months of working deep under cover as a special operator in the Army. He doesn’t exactly have much to come back to since he received a Dear John text from his live-in girlfriend while still deployed. But he has high hopes that maybe they could still work it out…

Only to come home to see all his things packed up and to find out that she’s been cheating on him. Oh and did I mention that she’s trying to kick him out of his own place? Poor guy just can’t seem to get a break.

Luckily (or not quite so for Clint), the beautiful stewardess that caught his eye on the plane comes to his rescue.

Della is not at all what she appears to be, and her intentions towards Clint are anything but innocent. She’s supposed to be doing a job, a simple trade; Clint for her sister. But her plan gets a whole lot more complicated when she begins to have feelings for the sexy soldier.

This book could have easily been a 5 star read for me, if not for a few things…

The insta-love angle
I had a tough time understanding the almost immediate connection these two share. I mean, we go from them barely exchanging a few words on a plane to him staying at her place and fucking like bunnies…

Then Clint goes and shares confidential information from his deployment with her even though he has doubts about who she really is and the secrets she hides. Good job there, Mr. Undercover Man. But I suppose that fits his character.

Clint’s submissive nature in bed. This is NOT a BDSM book, not at all, but Clint is most definitely the submissive partner in bed. That’s certainly not quite my cuppa, so I had a tough time with this one.

He had some Alpha tendencies, but sadly they pretty much got lost within all the time he submitted to Della’s MUCH more aggressive sexual nature. Though, oddly enough, it was still pretty damn hot…even if it isn’t quite my cuppa.

The sex
To be fair, I feel like I should warn readers that this book contains (highlight to view spoiler)pegging[Pegging (hide spoiler)].(Spoiler) Yes. (view spoiler)pegging.(Spoiler)As in (view spoiler)Della sporting a strap on and… holy strap on butt sex, batman! (spoiler)

It fits the book and the story, HOWEVER, it is a tad out of my comfort zone. I don’t have a huge problem with it, and it was written pretty damn hot, but it’s not a preference of mine in books.

The suspense part of the story is really what won me over. I spent a large part of the book on pins and needles just waiting for that other shoe to drop.

I really enjoyed the twist that Skye Warren added in the end. I did not see that coming at all. I think that was the very last thing I expected to happen. Della’s character was a very intriguing one to me, too. The things that she’s been through are terrible, but she had this tough core to her that I really liked. You know what she has to do, and you want to hate her for it, but yet your heart breaks for her all the same.

I found it to be more an erotic suspense than dark, but that may be because I’ve been pretty desensitized to Dark Romance, so it takes a LOT for me to label it that genre. There were dark elements here, but not many. I’d say this was more gritty than dark. At least in my opinion.

Ultimately did I enjoy this book? Yes.
Is it something that I would have read had I known in advance about Clint’s sexual submissiveness? Probably not.
Am I glad I read it? Surprisingly, yes.
Is it something I see myself re-reading in the future? Probably not

Writing style: Dual First Person POV

Skyeauthorpic
Skye Warren writes unapologetic erotica, including power play or erotic pain and sometimes dubious consent. There’s struggle in the sex. There’s pain in the relationships. Her books are raw, sexual and perversely romantic.

I had it all.

I was captain of the cheerleading squad and star of the debate team.

I was smart and popular and living the dream.

Until that night.

That one fateful night changed everything.

Now everyone hates me—everyone.

They stay far away.

It’s safer.

Drugs numb the pain, and sex pays for the drugs.

Being alive is my punishment.

Then I meet him.

Ryker Rosse.

Tattoos, sinful body…and his eyes. His eyes are irresistible.

He is captivating. He treats me with respect.

He sees me.

Ryker brings happiness into my life of regret, but I don’t know if I deserve happiness.

Some mistakes can never be forgiven.

Or can they?

Ryker’s thumb reached up and stroked the space between my eyes, a concerned look replacing his calm features. “What’s the matter?”

I took his hand and interlocked our fingers, placing both our hands over my chest. “Just happy.”

“Mmmm,” Ryker groaned, bringing his body closer to mine. “I think you’re going to need to sit like this.” He squeezed my left thigh and signaled me to swing it around the unicorn so that both of my legs dangled from the same side. His arms went behind my back, pulling himself against me. The unicorn I’d chosen to ride wasn’t that tall, so my opened thighs fit perfectly around Ryker’s lean waist. I could feel Ryker grow hard, the sudden stiffness pressing into me from beneath his jeans.

“That’s better,” he growled lowly in my ear, nipping the lobe. I hissed in pain, clenching my teeth as tingles crawled to the center of my body. Ryker sucked my earlobe into his mouth, easing the sting of his bite with his wet tongue. My body relaxed, easing loosely into Ryker’s arms as a pleasurable moan left my lips in a sigh.

I fought to keep my eyes open as I glanced around us to see who we were sharing the ride with. It was dark and late, so we didn’t have to worry too much about any underage kids catching a glimpse of us. We were the only ones on the ride except for a middle-aged couple seated on the other side of the merry-go-round in a large red sleigh instead of on the horses.

One light touch of Ryker’s lips to the sensitive spot below my left ear and I just about came undone. It was a kiss that would have made my knees buckle if I hadn’t already been sitting down. My mind still hadn’t wrapped around the fact that this man was mine to kiss. Every touch of his lips against my body made me dizzy. Pair that with being on a merry-go-round, and I wouldn’t be surprised if I fainted.

That one simple kiss already had me slick with desire and wanting more. I placed my hands flat against his chest and looked up at him through my lashes, nibbling on my lower lip. Something about Ryker made me feel inexperienced and young. Maybe it was because he oozed masculinity from his very pores, or perhaps it was his eyes. His eyes showed a man who had seen too much in his lifetime, and not all of it good. It made me appreciate the light that shone in his eyes when he looked at me. It made me feel beautiful…cherished even. No man had ever looked at me the way Ryker did. I felt special when I was with him, in a way that I never had.

I never wanted the feeling to end.

Blog Tour, Excerpt & #Giveaway: ☆Besotted☆ by @GeorgiaLeCarre

In Forty 2 Days we cheered as we learned of Lana’s opportunity for a second chance to put things right with our wounded hero, Blake. We read with joy at the news of baby Sorab’s birth, and with tension in our bodies as the spirited Lana fought and finally overcame the might of Blake’s powerful family to win the heart of the man she adored.

But Lana still  needs answers to many burning questions.
The secrets are many and tangled. Will she get the answers she seeks?

Blake finally lays it on the line to Victoria, and declares his true love for Lana, but will that be the end of the matter?

Then there is the re-appearance of Marcus.

Can Lana keep her resolve and overcome all obstacles to claim her man forever?

The knock on the Lanesborough Suite’s door is firm and unhesitant. I glance at my watch. Very punctual. I like that. I open the door and… My, my, she is a beauty: waist-length, straight blonde hair, gorgeous big eyes. And scarlet lips. Lana almost never colors her lips so red. She is wearing a long, white coat belted at the waist and really, really high heels. They remind me of the shoes Lana wore the first night I met her.

She is chewing gum, though. I hate that. She must watch too many movies about big-hearted hookers. I put my hand out, palm outstretched. For a moment she looks at me, clueless. I raise my eyebrows and she hurriedly takes the gum out of her mouth and puts it into my hand. Then she raises her own eyebrows and cheekily stretches her hand out.

‘Don’t you want to come in first?’ I ask, amused but not showing it.

‘Of course,’ she says and walks past me. Her accent is odd. She must be making it up as she goes along.

I close the door and watch her walk ahead of me. She has a good walk. I like a woman who can walk with grace. She stops in front of the low table where there is a platter of fresh fruit and a bottle of champagne cooling in an ice bucket, then turns around to face me. For a moment I am distracted by the picture she makes standing in the agreeably English decor of traditional prints and chintzes teamed with bold choices of acid greens and Schiaparelli pinks.

‘I’m sorry, what’s your name?’

‘Rumor.’

I smile. The name suits her. She looks like a rumor. Couldn’t possibly be true.

‘Would you like a glass of champagne?’

She lifts one foot and lets it swing back. It is impossibly erotic. ‘I’d like to be paid first.’

I don’t react to the provocation. ‘The money is by the lamp.’

She glances at the neat pile of money as she works the two buttons on her coat. The coat lands on the sofa behind her. She is wearing a very short white dress. Wordlessly, she turns away from me and bends from the waist, so her ass is pushed out and her skirt rides up to where her smooth thighs indent and I glimpse the other thing I had specified—a freshly waxed pussy. The lips are already swollen and reddened, and as I watch moisture starts to gather.

Immediately I am hard as hell.

Slowly, holding that position, she counts the money. The desire to ram her while she is counting her money is strong, but I resist. She puts the last note on top of the pile she has counted, and turns to face me.

‘All there?’

‘Yeah,’ she says slowly, her acquired accent undergoing another change. ‘All there.’

I move towards her and put my hand between her legs. Obligingly, she parts them and my fingers start to play with the soaking flesh.

‘So Rumor, what shall we do with you?’

‘Mr. Barrington—’

‘Blake,’ I say persuasively, as I continue to explore the silky, wet folds.

Will all go smoothly for the lovers on their big day?
Or is there unforeseen drama that may yet still spoil the couple’s happily ever after

‘What about BDSM? Are you going to teach me something about that?’

He looks at me over the rim of his glass. ‘Why? Are you interested in being a submissive?’

‘I don’t know. I could be. What is it?’

‘It’s a game.’

‘I like games. Start me off and I’ll tell you if I like it.’

He stops smiling, his eyes change, darken. Very deliberately he positions his hand right in front of him, tips his glass sideways and allows the liquid in it to pour onto the table. I watch the puddle grow on the table. At some point before the glass is empty he stops pouring. I lift my eyes from the spill and look at him. His eyes are expressionless, watchful. The silence stretches. I break it. ‘Well?’

‘Clean it up,’ he says.

‘What?’

‘I don’t need to repeat myself, do I? It is a punishable offence.’

For a moment I feel confused. Was this the thing that has everybody hot up the collar? Do I want to be his little slave? The answer is obvious and immediate. I don’t. Definitely not. But I’ll let it play a little more and see where this little game goes. I turn towards the paper towels.

‘Not with the paper towel.’ His voice cracks like a whip.

I turn towards him slowly. Our eyes clash, a look of impatience about his. What does he want me to do? Clean the table with my tongue? The thought is unsexy, off putting. ‘With what then?’

He leans back and folds his arms across his chest. ‘With your sex.’

And suddenly I am wet. The idea is shocking but incredibly, unbelievably erotic. I step out of my knickers and walk towards him. I pull myself onto the table and opening my legs slightly so he can see what I am doing slowly drag my sex across the spill. Something flashes in his eyes. When I have dragged myself across the liquid I stop and look to him.

He nods slowly. ‘You, he says, and there is a touch of admiration in his voice, ‘are an excellent pupil. You never do more than what you are instructed to do.’

I say nothing. Just hold myself in that position.

‘Now spread your legs,’ he orders.

Interview with Van Ransom

VAN RANSOM: Mad Man or Just Misunderstood?
ROLLING STONE INTERVIEW WITH VAN RANSOM
RS: Hello, Mr. Ransom. It’s nice to meet you.
Van: Is it? *leans back in chair and folds heavily inked arms* What would you say is particularly nice about it?
RS: Um, well…your band, Hostage for Ransom, has had an amazing year. That must be pretty exciting to be a part of. How has the past year been for you?
Van: *snorts* Honestly I can’t remember most of it.
RS: *checks notecards* When you say you can’t remember, you mean…
Van: I mean I was dropped on my head a lot as a kid and I have short-term memory deficit.
RS: Okay. Perhaps you should see a doctor.
Van: Perhaps I should. I’ll look right into that.
RS: Mr. Ransom, surely your aware of the rumors circulating.
Van: Can’t say I am. Don’t have a habit of paying attention to rumors.
RS: Ah well, of course not. I just meant that, with all the media speculation, surely you’re aware that there have been mumblings about the possibility of your label, Red Devil Records, dropping you due to the incident last year in Vegas.
Van: I was in Vegas last year? Well, damn. Kind of wish I did remember that.
RS: Let’s take this opportunity to lay the rumors to rest then. Did you or did you not wreck a ten thousand dollar a night hotel room?
Van: *raises and eyebrow* That’s what they tell me.
RS: Any idea why you might’ve done something like that? Did you have a fight with someone? Another member of your band perhaps?
Van: *huffs out a harsh laugh* The only person I fight with is the voice in my head. So yeah, maybe he pissed me off.
RS: And the bus?
Van: *narrows eyes* What about it?
RS: Want to tell your fans why you trashed your tour bus last week and canceled two shows in New York?
Van:  There was…New York is… You know what? On top of all the shit I can’t remember, I have no recollection of agreeing to this interview. I think we’re done here.
*stands abruptly, knocking over chair and is followed out by his manager and a publicist*
Van Ransom, ladies and gentlemen. Mad man or just misunderstood? We can’t be sure. Guess you’ll just have to decide for yourself.

Review: ☆Behold the Stars (Signal Bend, 2)☆ by Susan Fanetti

Lawrence Ellis, with vast wealth and power, has made it known that he wants control of Signal Bend, Missouri. He is a man who always gets what he wants; there are no limits to the lengths he’ll go, and he has the means to pay all manner of people to do his dirty work for him. The Night Horde MC, led by its President, Isaac Lunden, is wildly outmatched but prepared nonetheless to defend their hometown to the last man, and they are willing to do whatever they must to protect their home. Lilli Accardo, Isaac’s old lady, with her own special skills and resources, stands with them, rebelling against Isaac’s need to shield her.

After toying with them for months, Ellis loses patience for the game and rains down destruction on the Horde, their families, and the town itself. Tested to their very limits, beyond anything they could have imagined, forced to travel dark roads, the citizens of Signal Bend fight a war no one—not even they themselves—thinks they can win.

Challenged constantly from without, beset by their own inner demons, Isaac and Lilli must find the true strength within their bond. Isaac needs to protect what is his; Lilli needs to stand on her own; but they are stronger side by side.

Even in the deepest darkness, love brings hope.

NOTE: dark themes; explicit sex and violence.

5 Mindblowing Stars

I fucking love the FUCK out of this fucking book!

Yes, all those fucks are necessary here. It stressed me the fuck out! I’m running on 3 hrs of sleep, but you know what?

I WOULD do my own casting, but I have the dream cast that Miss Fanetti herself picked out, and I love it, so I’m just gonna go with that 🙂
(Well that and I’m a lazy shit LOL)

L’amor che muove il sole e l’atltre stelle.

The love that moves the sun and the other stars.

It’s no secret that I may be just a little, tiny bit, eetsy bitsy obsessed with this series. And by that I mean I am somewhat short of stalkerish with Susan about all her future releases. I can’t help myself. It’s not often you read a book that not only manages to grab a hold of you with a story that’s not only erotic, but gritty, emotional, gut wrenching, and beautiful. While I enjoyed the first book, the continuation of Isaac and Lilli’s story in this one was so gripping, I couldn’t seem to put it down. And then right after the 40% mark? FORGET ABOUT IT!!!

So without giving you any spoilers or revealing much of the plot, let me tell you what this book has.

ISAAC

Quite possibly the most perfect man…(well for an MC book hero anyway). If you liked Isaac in the first book, be prepared to fall hard for him in this one. Really. You don’t believe me?

Baby, I will burn this house down tonight. I don’t care. I don’t. My home is with you. If you don’t want to take my name, we’ll figure out a way to get yours back. I want to marry you, but I don’t care if you’re a Lunden, if you don’t want it. None of it matters. You matter. Tell me what you want, and I will make it happen- no. No. I’ll get out of your way while you make it happen.

I rest my case.

Lilli
The best heroine I’ve ever had the pleasure to read about. No exceptions. She’s strong with just the right amount of vulnerable and a twist of ‘kick ass’. Everything that she goes through and the way she gets through it…Damn. You just can’t help but love her. She’s no damsel in distress, I can tell you this much. This is a heroine that is more than capable of rescuing herself, and she does, on several occasions.

The plot

Sweet mother of anxiety! If you’re looking for a gritty read, this will deliver it in spades. I’m not even going to give you any hints, because even a little would be a spoiler. But what I can tell you is be prepared to read the last 60% in one sitting. I couldn’t believe everything that happened. My heart hurt, my stomach was in knots, my anxiety was through the roof. When I finally finished, I felt drained

And by food, I mean vodka, of course. Obviously.

I’m a huge fan of Susan Fanetti, and this book proves exactly why. If you’re a fan of gritty, erotic, emotionally gripping and action packed MC reads, this series needs to be at the top of your list. Trust me. You’ll see what I mean when you read it.

In short, I’ll put it this way. Do I recommend this book? FUCK YES.

Review: ☆Willing Victim☆ by Cara McKenna

For the past couple years Laurel’s been coasting, hiding in the backseat while her life drifts off course. Then one summer afternoon a tall, built bruiser named Flynn strides in and steers her straight into an infatuation she never saw coming.Flynn introduces Laurel to things she’s never imagined—to the violent but exciting realm of the underground boxing circuit, to rough sex and even rougher role-playing, and to an attraction she craves even as it intimidates her. As Flynn invites her deeper into his world and his life, Laurel has to make a choice—let fear keep her holed up where it’s safe, or take a chance and fight for the man who makes her feel more alive than she’d dreamed possible.

Reader Advisory: Although all sex acts are 100-percent consensual, Willing Victim contains role-playing scenarios that may upset some readers who are sensitive about rape, even in a simulated capacity.

I like fighting, and I like fucking. I don’t care much for thinking.

Oh sweet mother of orgasms! I had a very close and passionate relationship with my Kindle while reading this book

9371687If you’ve already met Flynn, you’ll know EXACTLY what I’m talking about.

8247676And if you have yet to meet him? You already know what I’m talking about.

The man is lethal to your ovaries. I’m not even slightly exaggerating here. The description of Flynn alone got me all hot and bothered

He looked both lean and heavy, raw and bruised and tattooed and feral. Muscles sicced and jumped in this arms as he stripped cotton bandaging off his wrists and tossed it in the trash basket behind him.

9371688But then he opens his mouth…

God,Flynn”
“That’s right. Say my name. Tell me who’s fucking that tight cunt.”

9371689I recommend having either your significant other on hand, or plenty of batteries. This book may be short, but holy SHIT is it potent?

You have a hot, dirty talking, underground fighter that’s into some verra interesting things. You have a great heroine that’s not afraid to go after what she wants. You have mind blowing, incendiary sex scenes that will have you running towards the nearest cold shower. And you have dirty talk to beat all dirty talk. My only complaint? I wish this was a full length novel. I would have loved to get to know Flynn and Laurel better. It’s tough to form a true connection with characters in just 130 pages. I can’t say that I never did, but I was left wanting just a little bit more.

You get your trademark Cara McKenna HFN ending. But truthfully, considering the short span of time that this book takes place in, I couldn’t imagine it ending any other way.

Andy and I had been best friends since we were eight-years old. Watching him slowly fade away, ever closer to his final breath, made me so incredibly angry. I knew there was nothing I could do to change it–I had given in to despair, but Andy had not. He had one last hand to play. He wasn’t going to simply sit back and wait for Death to claim him–not Andy. He was going to live life until he couldn’t hold his eyes open any longer.

Andy didn’t want to die in some sterile hospital and asked me to take him and Emily to the beach. It would be our last road trip together.

Emily. Emily was a problem for me. I harbored a secret that would have torn our friendship apart. I was in love with Andy’s girl, and had been since she’d walked into our sixth grade class, so many years ago.

So what kind of person am I? My best friend is dying, and it’s awful–but my heart still aches for his girl. I hate myself for thinking beyond Andy’s death and whether there could ever be a future for Emily and I, but I can’t help it. I love her.

ARC Review: ☆Dare to Resist☆ by @laurakayeauthor

A sexy category romance from Entangled’s Brazen imprint…

Trapped and tempted, this battle of wills rages all night long…

Kady Dresco and Colton Brooks click on a level that defies logic. There are only two problems. One, he’s her older brother’s irritating best friend, and two, they’re bidding on the same military security services contract.

When the competition heats up, Colton is torn between wanting to strangle Kady (and her annoying brilliance) and kissing her into submission. Which is a bad idea for a million reasons, because Kady’s submission is exactly what he craves. Being trapped in a tiny motel room with the object of his darkest fantasies will require every ounce of his restraint.

Kady doesn’t want his restraint, but Colton knows better. She deserves love, marriage, and a white picket fence—three things Colton can’t give her. But her proximity and the memory of their steamy near-miss three years ago slowly destroys his resolve. And he’s not sure how much longer he can keep his hands off…or his heart closed.

4.5 Dirty Talk Overload stars

Trapped and tempted, this battle of wills rages all night long…

It’s not often I’d rate a novella more than 4 stars. No really. It isn’t. True story. The biggest reason is I always have a hard time connecting to the story and the characters in just a few pages. The fact that this book managed to do just that AND leave me panting and salivating for the rest of the series? Well that my friends is a book worthy of 4.5 stars.

So let’s see, this book had:

Great story

If there’s anything I love more than a friends to lovers trope, it’s the brother’s best friend falls for younger sister. Yep. Always does it for me. Kady and Colton basically grew up together since Colton was her brother’s best friend. But he was also 6 years her senior, and off limits. Well…that is until he went off to the army and came back when Kady was 23 years old. So they finally gave in to the explosive chemistry between them…only for Colton to cut things off abruptly before things got REALLY good. He had his reasons, but Kady doesn’t need to know them. Now 3 years have gone by and the way they deal with that night? Well, Colton has one way of making it work

Since he couldn’t give in to what he really wanted from Kady Dresco, he picked on her and snarked at her and genreally gave her grief. And she gave it right back. Sometimes he thought they were engaged in one long round of mental foreplay.

I’d have to agree with you there, Colton. Those barbs and insults were pretty much laden in sexual tension and innuendos

Plus I loved that Kady could dish it as well as take it. She had a bit of sass to her that I really liked.

Hot hero?

Any questions?

Sexy as hell dirty talk?

You aren’t getting my cock until you come again. I want you to come so hard my whole hand is wet with it.”

Did I also happen to mention that Colton likes things on the rough and forceful side? Oh I didn’t? Well now you know. You’re welcome.

Awesome heroine?
Some verra rough and spicy hot lovin? and

My only complaint? I wish it was longer. What a perfect novella to start off what seems to look like an AWESOME new series with a bang. Pun most definitely intended. I can’t wait to get my pervy little hands on the next book in the series.

If you’re looking for a quick and verra steamy read that will entertain you, leave you hot and bothered and begging for more…Why are you still reading my review?

Review: ☆With The Band (Luminescent Juliet, 3)☆ by @JeanHaus

When they get an offer to join a national tour, the musicians of Luminescent Juliet finally find their ticket to fame. But for Sam, the band’s dazzling but troubled bassist, making sure his past stays locked away feels more important than winning the spotlight.

Then Peyton, a budding music journalist, joins the tour, tasked with chronicling the band’s every move. She and Sam have a history, one that has made them enemies. Neither wants to deal with old pain and misunderstanding, and they agree to keep the past in the past. This is more than fine with Peyton?after all, it?ll only help reassure her picture-perfect boyfriend back on campus that following the band is all totally professional.

Yet being forced to look at Sam in a new way brings Peyton a different perspective on the past?and his magnetic baby-blues and rippling muscles are hard to ignore. When the tour kicks into high gear, the real truth about their shared past comes to light, and Peyton is rocked by forces as passionate and chaotic as the music she loves.

This book is intended for mature teen audiences due to strong language and some sexual content

Even amid falling leaves

She was brighter

Than the summer sun
Fell under the spell of her
Smiling brown eyes
Faster than a breath
And when she’s gone
It’s always night
And I’m under a bleak moon
A bleak, bleak moon

I used to love all things New Adult, but lately it’s become harder and harder to find a book that stands out and doesn’t blend in with all the rest. You know what I’m talking about, it’s the NA recipe; you start with angst, throw in a dash of sexual tension, a dollop of melodrama, perhaps a pinch of stupid childish miss-communication, then top it all off with a bad boy hero and the good girl (possibly virginal) heroine that shouldn’t fall for him but does. Sound familiar? I bet it does. And this is exactly why I love this series and this author. Does it have some of those things? Sure. But Jean Haus manages to take a story that maybe may have been done before and throw her own unique spin on it, that I can’t really compare it to any other books I’ve read. My favorite thing about it is the way she’s able to fuse these books with music. I had my own soundtrack playing in my head as I was reading it. This is quickly becoming my go to NA series when I’m pretty much guaranteed a book that I will enjoy.

This story finally gives us a lot more insight on the reclusive and troubled bassist, Sam. Luminescent Juliet gets the opportunity of a lifetime when they’re offered to join a national tour. But then Sam gets a blast from the past in the shape of a blonde he hoped to never see again, Peyton.

Peyton is not exactly thrilled to see Sam again either. She doesn’t exactly have the fondest memories of their past. But when she’s offered to chronicle the band’s tour, it’s not an opportunity she can turn her back on. No matter how much she dreads seeing Sam or having to think about what happened that have made them hate each other.

There’s certainly no love lost between these two. But beneath their constant barbs and insults brews something…more. What starts out as hate, disdain, and loathing soon starts blurring into an undeniable attraction.

But can Sam and Peyton get over their past in order to deal with their future? You’ll have to read to find out.

Telling you anything else would be spoiling the book for you, and I’d recommend reading it without reading many reviews in order to truly appreciate it. I can tell you that when the truth of what happened those years ago comes to life…well, it was the last thing I saw coming.

I simply couldn’t put this book down. I was hooked from the very first chapter and got more and more drawn in with each new page. I love that Miss Haus made you really understand the characters and their past before she allowed the chemistry between them to truly shine through. It just made me all that more invested in their relationship. As much as I wanted to hate Peyton (since i think this would have been exactly the case in any other book), I simply couldn’t. Her struggle was evident, and you can see how much she grew in the short span of the story.

Sam. Sam is that bad boy that completely broke my heart. God I loved him. Yet my heart hurt for him at the same time. He was just perfection. The author took a subject manner that I haven’t seen in many books and wrote a brilliant story about love, loss, and learning to move on. It was a fantastic read with just the little amount of steam to make it that much better.

I loved catching up with the rest of the band, and I’m keeping my fingers crossed that we’ll be seeing Gabe’s book next.

If you’re a fan of well written NA rock star romances, I highly recommend this one. While it can easily be read as a standalone, I’d recommend reading in order since it makes you appreciate each character that much more. Plus they’re great books. What more reason do you need?
