Fans of sweet romance with a sexy kick and beta heroes will adore this latest from the fabulous Jessica Clare.
This was my first book in the series by this author, and I had absolutely no issues picking this up 3 books in. I immediately grew a liking to the heroine, Chelsea Hall. This is clearly a woman with some cracks, but she’s by no means broken. At least not in my opinion. She was strong in her own right, but I also absolutely loved her vulnerable side. This is someone that’s been through something tragic and that’s evident from the very first chapter.

Sebastian Cabral is a wonderful hero. I simply loved the way that he was with Chelsea; patient, understanding and kind. This is not your average brooding, manwhore billionaire with issues. That’s not to say he’s without any, but a kooky family and the issues that ensues from their popular television show just made him more endearing. In an effort to avoid a crazy ex intent on being famous, and for Chelsea to avoid men hitting on her, they come to a mutually beneficial arrangement; marriage…without the benefits. They become each other’s safety nets, though it’s not long before the sexual chemistry brewing between them begins to take hold.

Now you’re probably thinking why only three stars. Well, as much as I hate to say it but this book was just too sweet for me.
Now now, don’t judge me here! It’s fair to say that this had absolutely nothing to do with the book and absolutely everything to do with reader preference. I prefer my heroes alphas, and a more unassuming beta hero doesn’t tickle my fancy as much. While Sebastian is a great hero, he’s just not what I prefer in my books. If you’re looking for a story with a hero that’s as rich as he is nice, then Sebastian is definitely your guy.

ExcerptHudson pored over the dossier, trying to find something, anything, that might explain what the hell was going on. Had the past few days been an act, waiting for the perfect out? Or had it been a final good-bye, fucking each other senseless just to purge it out of her system? Had Allie realized that no matter what his zip code, he still wasn’t good enough? He gripped the document in his hand to avoid punching his fist through the tinted glass. He hadn’t even had a fighting fucking chance to talk her out of it.

“Mr. Chase.” Max’s voice cut through the rhetoricals and Hudson’s laser-sharp eyes darted to the rearview mirror. “The plane is on standby and the crew is ready to depart as soon as we arrive. ETA, eight minutes.”

Hudson checked his watch. “Thank you.” He took a deep breath in an attempt to downshift his nervous energy into focused calm, but his need to find Allie overrode all logic. If she thought she was walking without hearing him out. . . . Well, news flash, she was wrong. So fucking wrong.

After going through the airport’s private security entrance, the Mercedes shot down the tarmac and around the fat turn that lead to the hanger housing the Chase Industries plane. The car came to an abrupt stop inside, its tires squeaking against the highly polished concrete floor. Hudson exploded out of the vehicle. He didn’t give a shit if he had to fly halfway around the world to do it; he was going after her. Winning Allie back was a necessity, and if this was the way she wanted to play it, he was all fucking in.

He had no idea what tomorrow held. But for now, she was his.

A sexy, captivating and thrilling conclusion to a trilogy that captured me from the very start! If you haven’t met Hudson Chase, you haven’t lived. The man is intense, sinfully sexy, protective, with a touch of broody. While I’m not usually a reader of trilogies since my attention span seems to wane somewhere around book 2, I’ve been dying to get my hands on this book for one reason and one reason only: Hudson.
Reclaim Me teaser-DGRRelease Me ended on a cliffhanger that was guaranteed to leave readers desperately panting for the final book. After everything that Allie and Hudson have been through, will the secrets that Hudson kept from her and a man determined to ruin everything finally tear them apart? I already knew that Julian was going to be playing a huge role in everything that happens in Reclaim Me from the events of Release Me. And now he finds himself with an ace in the hole with the information he’s holding against Allie. He’s determined to get what he believes is rightfully his; Ingram media. This was one villain that I loved to hate. What a slimy, little asshole this one was. Everything considered, however, the suspense part of the story really took a backseat to Allie and Hudson’s relationship. I never thought I’d find myself saying this; but there was a touch too much sex in this story. So much so, that it almost felt like filler at parts. I could have done with less of that and more fleshing out of the actual plot. As it was, I found a lot of it to be almost overshadowed by the amount of sex that took place.

Not to say that I complained too much because said sex happens with Hudson and there’s never a dull movement with that man. He’s that good. Add in a touch of humor and I was putty in his very skilled hands.

How was that?”
“Amazing…Adventurous. Arousing…Awesome.”
He chuckled quietly. “Allie’s orgasm brought to you by the letter ‘A’?”

My only other minor quibble is the big secret from Hudson’s past that has been hovering over him and Allie like a dark shadow for the last two books. I suppose that I built it up in my head and that’s mainly to blame for my finding the big reveal to be anticlimactic , but it did explain quite a few things.

For those that enjoy a thrilling trilogy with intense alpha males that are as protective as they are kinky, this is surely not to be missed. While I enjoyed the previous two books more, the conclusion was still highly satisfying. I’m definitely a big fan of these two authors and look forward to whatever they have in store for the future.

When fantasy and reality collide…

There’s nothing like a near death experience to make a guy reassess his life. And that’s exactly what nightclub owner Logan McCabe decides to do, starting with looking up the girl he spent one wild night with eleven years ago, right before his life turned to crap. He spent a year fantasizing about her. Now he’s ready to see how reality matches up.

Abigail Parker is a perfectionist. She’s only strayed from the straight and narrow once in her life, on her eighteenth birthday. It was supposed to be one wild night with a totally unsuitable man before she settled into her sensible future. Instead it changed her life forever.

Logan might still be the sexiest man Imogen has ever seen, but a dirty-talking, tattooed, ex-con is the last thing she needs in her perfect life. He claims she’s his fantasy girl, but what he doesn’t know is she’s also the mother of his ten-year old daughter…

There’s only one thing I want your mouth doing right now, and it isn’t talking.”

Nothing like floating on a life raft with your buddies after escaping a sinking ship and puking off the side to reflect on one’s life. But that’s exactly what Logan McCabe finds himself doing. When the discussion leads to the one thing they’d go back in time to change, there’s only one thing floating in Logan’s mind. The sizzling one night stand he shared with a woman eleven years ago that rocked his world. So what’s a man to do? Look her up, track her down, and proposition her for more, of course.

Abby Parker is sensible, from her actions to her low heeled sandals. She had one night of wild eleven years ago, and got herself a souvenir to cherish the memory on top of it. She’s not looking for a walk on the wild side again, but when the sexy, tatted and dirty talking Logan shows up on her door, he throws her perfectly sensible life for one hell of a loop.

His Fantasy Girl is the first book in Nina’s scorching new Things To Do Before You Die series. If you love dirty talkers with a bit of a kinky side, heroines that are proper but with that right amount of wild to drive the hero even wilder, and a whole lot of hot sexy loving, this book is sure to please.

I like the way you look at my cock. Like you’re hungry for it and you’ll let me do whatever I like with it.”

Logan is an ex-con with an aversion to cops, and the Abby eleven years later just happens to be a detective. A match made in heaven they are not. I absolutely loved these two together. Abby may be a touch prissy, but she sure gives as good as she gets. Logan is everything I’ve come to love in a Brazen hero, totally alpha and a dirty talking god. Add in a secret pregnancy trope, and watch the sparks fly! My only quibble is what I felt was a little too much cheese with the ending. (view spoiler) But that certainly didn’t make this any less good.

If you’re looking for a sizzling romance to spend an evening with, look no further than this one.

Review4.5 starsNuts-DGR

I’ll see you around, I’m sure.”
“It’s a small town. Maybe you’ll show up at my backdoor with your nuts again.”

Adorably quirky, laugh out loud funny, and deliciously sexy, Nuts was the perfect escape read I’ve had in quite a while. Alice Clayton just gets better and better with each new book, but she simply outdid herself with this one. If the Nuts is anything to go by, we have quite a bit to look forward to in Alice’s new Hudson Valley series.

The eyes and the hair were a package deal, the hair was falling across his eyes in a careless way that said “Hey, girl. I’ve got peas on my shoes, but who cares, because I’ve got these eyes and this hair, and it’s pretty fucking great.”

Roxie Callahan is a celbrity chef in hollywood catering to the rich, famous and the entitled. She loves to cook…dealing with some of her clients? Not so much. So when an unfortunate butter incident costs her almost most of her clients, suddenly her kooky mother’s request for her to come back to the town she grew up in and run the restaurant while she’s away doesn’t sound so bad. Then a certain bearded farmer changes her outlook on the small town entirely…

You didn’t really bring me beets, did you?”…
“I did,” he murmured, his thumbs sliding underneath my T-shirt the tiniest bit. “I brought mad beets.”
“Oh man…Did you bring me anything else?”
He brought his face back to mine, tinged with the slightest of blush. “I hesitate to say it now.”
“What did you bring?” I asked, shaking his shoulders.
He buried his head once again into my neck. “A really big zucchini…”

And you know what the best part is? The entire book is filled with witty humorous dialogue like that. I must have read the entire book with a goofy smile on my face. My cheeks hurt I was grinning so much. Leo and Roxie together was pure gold. There’s enough sexual tension to truly make things sizzle. Alice Clayton definitely gives some good sexual tension. There’s just enough sexy to appease even the biggest pervies like me, but without being so much that it takes away from the book. It was the perfect balance of romance and humor.

It was also a refreshing change to get a heroine that’s the commitment phobe instead. Roxie is a strong, career oriented woman that’s not afraid to admit what she wants without any shame.

Pin 1. Don’t get involved.
Pin 2. Enjoy the penis. Engage no other organ,
Pin 3. Attachments are for suckers. See also Mom.
Pin 4. Falling in love sucks.

In addition to the fantastic secondary characters, the wit and the humor, the setting of the book is what really hooked me. The author did such a fabulous job truly engrossing the reader in this wonderful town. I couldn’t help but be transported there myself as I was reading it.

Rocie is probably one of my favorite heroines I’ve read in quite a while. And it has nothing to do with the fact that she shares my unreasonable fear of bees. They really are assholes. But everything to do with her quirky personality. All the characters in this book were so well developed that even the secondary characters jumped out at you in vivid clarity. The writing was simply luscious.

In a shell, this book was fantastic! If you’ve loved any of this author’s previous titles, you’re pretty much guaranteed a win with this one. I can’t wait for the next one in this series. Fingers crossed it’ll be the grouchy Oscar.

Are those nuts in your pocked, or you just glad to see me?”
“Both.”

Fans of Jodi Ellen Malpas, K. Bromberg, and Joanna Wylde will be unable to resist this sexy, deeply intimate tale of a woman running from her past, and the darkly mysterious man who sets her free.

I didn’t think answering someone else’s cellphone would change my life. But the stranger with the low, deep voice on the other end of the line tempted me, awakened my body, set me on fire. He was looking for someone else. Instead he found me.

And I found a hot, secret world where I felt alive for the first time.

His name was Dylan, and, strangely, he made me feel safe. Desired. Compelled. Every dark thing he asked me to do, I did. Without question. I longed to meet him, but we were both keeping secrets. And mine were dangerous. If I took the first step, if I got closer to Dylan—emotionally, physically—then I wouldn’t be hiding anymore. I would be exposed, with nothing left to surrender but the truth. And my truth could hurt us both.

Review

4 starsEILU-DGR

How far would she go?
She wanted dark? He had all the dark. All of it. And he’d show her every midnight corner of it.

How do you review a book where even the slightest detail can be a major spoiler? I’ve been struggling with writing this for days now because of this. I write something, then change my mind and delete it. Quite the conundrum I have myself here. If I can give you one piece of advice with this book? Go in absolutely blind. Don’t read reviews. Any reviews. Even mine (though I will keep it absolutely spoiler free). But this is just one of those books where what makes it good is the not knowing. You guess a detail here and there but you just never know exactly where it will go.

In the end it wasn’t a decision. Dylan was an instinct. An urge, like a tide in my blood.

Think a modern retelling of Beauty and The Beast, and yet not quite. This book was nothing I expected and yet I couldn’t seem to put it down. The less you know going into it, the more you’d enjoy.

My entire life I’d spent caring…soaking up every mood, decoding every silence. So attuned to everyone else around me that I’d practically evaporated.

Annie is running. She’s spent days on the road running from a past that still haunts her. Ending up in a trailer park and answering a stranger’s cell phone left behind in her trailer irrevocably changes everything for her with the sound of his voice. Dylan is a mystery, and while they know nothing about each other and keep their dark secrets close to their vests, there’s a draw they feel that’s unquestionable. What begins is almost a dare of sorts, a sexually liberating experience for Annie who has only known a reserved life completely isolated from everything. Dylan feeds a sexual hunger in her that she never knew. But the secrets they both keep can cost them everything in the end.

He’d learned the hard way to keep his wants and desires on a short list. Wanting too much, either one thing or a million, only meant he wouldn’t get it. He was clumsy with fragile things- always trying to hold onto them so hard they broke.

This book was unlike anything I’ve read in a long while. It’s super sexy even though the main characters spend a large part of the story not having met physically. That only serves to stoke a fire of chemistry that practically ignites every page by the end.

Dylan is a very compelling character though his past and even his present is clouded in mystery for most of the book. This is Annie’s side of the story and you get it revealed to you piece by piece until the entire devastating puzzle is laid out before you. Annie is not the typical heroine I enjoy reading about. She’s reserved, weak, a shell of a person that she could be due to her upbringing. Dylan feeds a darker hunger inside her that she never knew she had. And while I wanted to think that the things they do are almost out of character for her, it also oddly fit. I’m not even sure how to explain it.

The story itself was addictingly good, though clearly there’s still much more to the puzzle yet to be revealed. The writing is compelling and captivating and draws you in from the very first chapter. Be advised that there’s a hell of a cliffhanger at the end, but luckily book 2 is releasing just a short month after.

We played our roles, told each other lies.

But now Dylan is no longer just a mysterious deep voice on the other end of the line. We’re face-to-face and our relationship is very, very real.

We still have secrets—but so much is crystal clear:

The thrilling danger.

The raw, naked desire.

The need to keep feeling the way he makes me feel. Forever.

Dylan is putting up walls, trying to keep me safe, but he can’t shut me out. He has seen my darkness and rescued me. Now it’s my turn, if only he will let me.

Excerpt

“Thank you again for taking me.” Pulling my eyes from the road for a brief moment, I look at Ellie. Her head is resting against the window, her legs pulled up onto the seat, tucked near her ass, and her arms are wrapped tight around them. One thing I’ve noticed about her over the last few hours is she’s always wrapping her arms around herself or tucking her body into a tight ball. It’s like she’s forcing herself to stay together.

“I told you I got you, baby,” I say gently, wanting more than anything to take her hand in mine, but every time I touch her, she freezes up like she’s waiting for me to strike out at her, and I would be lying if I said that didn’t piss me the fuck off. It does; it feels like a slap in the face every time it happens.

“I know,” she whispers, and the tears I hear in her voice cause a sharp pain in my chest.

Fuck.

“This is the turnoff.” Her feet go to the floorboard and her hands to the dash as she sits up taller, moving her face closer to the windshield. We drive up a long dirt driveway with forest and the occasional broken down car on each side. When we make it to the top of the hill, a singlewide trailer comes into view, with junk cars and garbage piled up out front.

As soon as I come to a stop, she opens her door and hops out before I can tell her to keep her little ass in the cab. I don’t even know how I’m going to deal with the range of emotions that have settled over me since seeing her for the first time.

“Fucking Boom,” I mutter, getting out behind her and doubling my steps until I’m able to reach her side, where I wrap my hand around her waist and pull her closer to me. She’s so fucking tiny that the top of her dark head sits right at my chest. So fragile, from her too soft skin to her petite size. And she’s mine.

Review3.5 starsUntil Jax-DGR

She’s mine. She may not understand it- hell, I don’t even know if I understand it- but she was made for me.

Aurora Rose Reynolds books always have been and will continue to be my guilty pleasure. A little fluffy, a lot steamy and with a dose of insta love, I don’t know any other author that can pull all that off in one book and actually make me enjoy it. Something about this boys and their “booms”. I can’t even explain it. But I like it.

I was a little confused as this book shows to be the first in the Until Him series but it starts off basically exactly where Until July ended with Jax meeting Ellie as she escaped her captors and ran from them in the woods. Those that haven’t read Until July yet may find themselves slightly confused as it almost feels like you’re starting the book in the middle of the chapter. It does get better explained later in the book but I do feel like reading Until July first would help. I’m not sure why these are two different series as the characters are all interconnected. But ah well.

Until Jax was a a fun read that was a little muddled with ow drama for me. While most of the author’s heroes tend to come with a manwhorish past and Jax is no different, I’m used to all that and it doesn’t bother me at all. But in the case here, it was just a little much. Perhaps if there was only just (view spoiler).

Aside from that, it was a very fun read and one I finished in one sitting. Total escapism book. Nothing that makes you think too hard; just a sexy hero, the heroine that brings him to his knees, and their journey to HEA. Easy and to the point.

Now there was also the introduction of Kim and the mother of all teases of her connection to Sage, Jax’s younger cousin. If Aurora doesn’t give us a book for them soon, I think I’ll explode. Seriously. That set up? GAH!! I can’t even. It was like it was custom written to tease the ever loving hell out of me.

IY Quote #1

Excerpt

“First game?” he asked.

Brown eyes flicked to him, barely. “What?”

“First baseball game?”

That got her attention. For the first time, she seemed to really look at him. Her eyes drifted over him slowly, before returning to his, her tone just slightly annoyed. “No. Not my first game.”

“Ah,” he said, already mentally maneuvering into a backpedal. “Bad assumption of me. You were just so into the game . . .”

“So you figured I must be trying to figure out how it all worked?” she asked. “That I must be trying to understand why some of the field is green and some is brown, and whatever could those white squares on the dirt be, and why-oh-why are those men running toward the white squares, but only sometimes . . .”

“All right,” Cole said with a laugh. “I’m an ass. You know baseball.”

Her smile was quick and easy, and he was relieved to see that she wasn’t one of those snippy, hold-it-against-him-forever types. “I know baseball.”

Is that what’s in your notebook? Baseball stuff?

She took a huge bite of her hot dog, completely unabashed at her bulging cheeks, and Cole hid a smile, pretending instead to be fixated on the game.

Hell. When had he ever had to pretend to be fixated on the Yankees?

“You were partially right,” she admitted, after swallowing.

He glanced at her. “Oh yeah?”

She grinned. “This is my first Yankees game.”

“I knew it,” he said, matching her grin full on. “I knew there was something virgin about you. But tell me, how come a baseball fan like you never made it to Yankee Stadium until now?”

“Well . . .” She licked a spot of mustard off her finger, but not in the slow, deliberate way that most women he knew would have done it. “It’s a long way from Chicago . . .”

Cole tore his eyes away from the way her lips closed around her thumb, sucking off that mustard. “You’re from Chicago?”

“From there, yes,” she said. “But let’s just say that as of two weeks ago, I’ll be spending a lot more time here than at Wrigley.”

“Ah. You’re new to New York.”

“Quite.”

“How do you like it?”

She hesitated. “It’s . . . intense.”

“Meaning . . . we New Yorkers are scary as hell?”

She smiled. “Well, it’s not as hostile as I’d been warned, but yeah. We Chicagoans are a bit more openly friendly than you New Yorkers.”

“I’m friendly,” he countered.

Tiny Brunette laughed. “No. You’re just incredibly charming. And a smidgen good-looking.”

He gave her his best bedroom look. “Am I?”

She smiled. “You know you are.”

Their eyes held for a moment, and Cole was startled to realize it was the most relaxed—the most himself—he’d felt around a woman in . . . hell . . . he didn’t know.

Mostly he was used to throwing out a couple of witty lines, a few slow smiles, and watching women counter with moves of their own.

There were no moves with this woman. She merely was.

Cole realized he didn’t even know her name.

“So tell me, as a Chicago baseball fan, are you Team Cubs or Team White Sox, Ms. . . .”

“Pope,” she said. “Penelope Pope. And both.”

Cole’s subconscious acknowledged that Penelope Pope was somehow exactly what this woman’s name should be. Perky and alliterative. His consciousness, however, latched on to another fact. “Both?”

It was not a typical answer. Most people had one baseball team, even if you were from a city with two teams, as Penelope was.

She shrugged. “Baseball’s not about who wins. It’s not even about who’s playing. It’s about the game. The consistent flow of it, the smack of the ball against the glove when you’re lucky enough to be sitting along one of the baselines, instead of stuck up here in this stuffy box—”

He stared at her. The words so closely echoed his own thoughts from just moments before that he wanted to kiss her.

She might just be his dream woman.

“That explains the hot dog,” he said.

“What?”

He nodded his chin at the last bite of hot dog, ignored in her left hand. “The hot dog. You’re in a luxury suite in Yankee Stadium with a whole buffet of gourmet foods, and yet you went and fetched the most basic hot dog you could find.”

She grinned. “Guilty.”

Cole turned his body all the way toward her now. “Tell me, Penelope Pope, what brings a Cubs and White Sox fan all the way to New York where you’ll face a whole new dilemma of choosing between the Yankees and the Mets . . .”

Tiny Brunette never got to answer.

The shadow of someone coming up behind their seats caused them both to turn. It was Alex Cassidy, Oxford’s editor in chief, looking down at them with a half-amused, half-worried expression.

“Cassidy,” Cole said. He lifted an eyebrow and silently added, Nice of you to show up.

“Sorry I’m late,” Cassidy said, not really sounding sorry at all. “I got held up.”

Automatically, Cole’s eyes scanned the luxury suite until he found the pretty woman he knew was likely to be somewhere around here . . .

Yup, there she was.

Emma Sinclair, Cassidy’s long-ago runaway bride, with whom he’d recently reconciled, was surreptitiously wiping smudged lipstick from the corner of her mouth.

His eyes returned to his boss, this time looking closer . . .

“Third button, dude,” Cole said wearily.

The always polished Cassidy glanced down, and without so much as wincing, fixed the misaligned buttons of his shirt.

Cole should have known. A naked Emma Sinclair was the only thing that could throw Alex Cassidy off his rigid timetable.

But Emma and Cassidy’s sex life was where the predictable part of the evening ended, because Cole was absolutely not prepared for Cassidy to reach out a hand to Tiny Brunette, a polite smile on his usually impassive face.

“Alex Cassidy. I’m so sorry I’m late, Ms. Pope.”

Cole glanced between the two of them. They knew each other?

“Not a problem,” she said, turning an easy smile on Cassidy. It was the exact same friendly smile she’d given Cole, and it very much made Cole want to punch his friend in the mouth.

“It’s refreshing to see you two playing so nicely,” Cassidy said with a droll look at Cole.

He narrowed his eyes at his boss, not sure what he was missing, but certain that he was missing something.

Cassidy answered Cole’s silent question with his usual professional businessman smile. “Cole, this is Penelope Pope.”

“We’ve met,” Cole said slowly.

“Excellent. So then you know that Penelope is our late-stage applicant for the sports editor role at Oxford?”

Very slowly, Cole turned toward Tiny Brunette. Took in her friendly smile even as he took in the sorry-not-sorry glint in her eyes.

This was his competition. This was the person standing between Cole and the job he so desperately wanted.

“I suppose I should have been more thorough when I introduced myself,” she said sweetly. “Penelope Pope. Sports editor.”

Plus side? At least now Cole knew what was in her damn notebook.

The downside? Everything else.

I will treat you with the respect you deserve at work, and then I will use your sweet body for sex AFTER work, but Penelope Pope, I give you my solemn promise not to fall in love with you.”

Lauren Layne is my go-to author whenever I’m in the mood for a light-hearted, sexy and witty romance, and this book is exactly why. There’s one thing that’s guaranteed when I read one of her books; I’ll read it with a happy smile on my face the entire time. While I haven’t yet had the pleasure of reading her Sex, Love & Stiletto series, of which this is the spin-off, I had absolutely no problems keeping up with all the wonderful secondary characters or the story itself.

How had this happened? How was it this sweet, feisty tomboy could turn him on just as easily as she turned him completely inside out every time she looked at him?

Cole Sharpe is a sports editor that has been a freelancing for Oxford magazine for years. All his friends work there, and he happens to be friendly with the boss. So when a staff position opens up on the staff, he’s got it in the bag…or so he thinks…

Penelope had no illusions about her place in the world of men: the friend zone.

Penelope Pope has always been seen as one of the guys. Her slim, boyish figure and love of sports pretty much guarantee it. When a man breaks her heart and steals a job that she was dreaming of in Chicago, she runs to New York to start fresh. And what’s a better way than with the coveted position of sports editor at Oxford Magazine? She just has to beat out the devilishly sexy Cole with the position.

…what are you after?”
“Isn’t it obvious? I’m out to be an expert on Penelope Pope. Because, despite your efforts to prove otherwise, I don’t believe for one second that you don’t want me.

Penelope is nothing like Cole’s usual type; of the blonde and leggy variety. So why is it he can’t stop thinking of the petite beauty that seems to stir his blood just as much as she puts a smile on his face?

This is just one of those friends-to-lovers romances you can’t help but love. Cole and Penelope develop a friendship all the while having this undercurrent of lust that runs like electricity between them. I loved how he calls her “tiny”. And Penelope, although not a ravishing beauty and with her share of hangups was such a fantastic heroine. She’s witty, funny, and adorably endearing.

You should know…I’m not very good at this,” she said.
He smiled and ran a finger over her lower lip. “Don’t worry. Because I’m VERY good at this.”

All the secondary characters add to the story while the main focus remains on Penelope and Cole and their budding romance. We still get a taste for past characters, as well as Lincoln who I was clearly intrigued by (because I do so love me the broken manwhorish ones) but it never takes away from the story, only adds to it. It read like the perfect romantic comedy.

The chemistry between Cole and Penelope was utter perfection. Penelope doesn’t want long term because she doesn’t think Cole would be interested. Cole is adorably confused by the whole thing because his feelings for Penelope completely blindsided him. So they agree to be friends and coworkers on the weekdays, and work out their inconvenient lust for each other on the weekends. It doesn’t take long for both of them to realize that they’re far more than mere friends with benefits.

He didn’t know exactly what THIS was.
But whatever they decided to call it- or not call it- he could all too easily get used to it.

If you’re looking for a light, sexy, and witty romance, you can never go wrong with Lauren Layne. I’m hooked on this series and can’t wait for more (ESPECIALLY if it’s Licoln…because hello! Broken manwhore!)
A fantastic start to what’s looking to be an even better series. Me likey!

I thought you said you were no good at this,” he growled.
“Guess I just needed to do it with the right guy.”

CALLUM

Lake and I never had a chance at normal. She was drop dead gorgeous from day one – our maid’s granddaughter who became my mother’s spoiled living doll. I hated that girl with all my heart and at the same time, I worshipped every inch of her skin, every word that she spoke. I lived for her and the twisted game of truth or dare we created to feed our f***ed up needs for shock, shame and one-upping each other. Lake was my drug, my bad lifestyle choice.

And I’d fallen in and out of love with her a thousand times till the day she disappeared.

LAKE

I know I ruined Callum Pike and going back to New York may be the worst decision I’ve ever made, which is saying a lot. But I’m willing to risk it. I never wanted to leave and now that I can, I’m going back – to be with the man I made, who made me. I know I screwed him up. I know he’s hardened and become cold. I know the love we had is gone. But I need him now more than ever and no matter how much it hurts, no matter what kind of sick or satisfying way he decides to torment me, I’m going to fight through it.

I’m going to repent for the way I broke him and I’m going to find the Callum Pike I loved again – even if it tears me apart.

Dare MeDare Me by Stella Rhys
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

3.5 Stars

Plain and simple, I hated her…
Because of my mom, this random girl became my damned responsibility, and I wound up hating her as much as I fucking loved every inch of her skin and every goddamned word that she spoke.

Now before I get into my review, allow me to clarify my rating. 3.5 stars means I liked the book. Quite a bit. And I did. I loved the story, the characters, and I highly enjoyed the writing. There was just one particular part missing for me (which has everything to do with my tastes as a reader and not with the book itself) that kept this being from a solid 4 stars. But I’ll get to that in a bit…

Stella Rhys is a new to me author that caught my attention with this book and it’s delicious synopsis. What can I say? I’m a sucker for the hate-to-love trope and I haven’t read one book with it yet that I haven’t liked. Dare Me was certainly no exception. We have hate to love AND second chance romance all in one book? That’s like waving a bone in front of a rabid dog for me. I kid you not. I’m on it like there’s no tomorrow.

Lake and Callum grew up together when Lake’s grandmother passed away and Callum’s mother unofficially adopted her into the family fold. Always wanting a daughter, she doted on Lake and spoiled her with all the luxuries Lake’s former upbringing didn’t allow her. Callum was the boy that she hated to love…. or is it loved to hate…

While they’re not “together” in their youth, they do allow themselves a game through their truth or dare games that constantly finds them together. They date other people, but always find themselves gravitating towards each other until they finally fall in love….but then Lake disappears and leaves Callum a broken, and cold hearted man in the place of the naive boy that was in love. Now six years later she’s back and determined to right her wrongs, but Callum won’t make it easy on her. He wants answers for her leaving; answers she’s not so ready to give.

Am I worth it to you, Callum?”
“You are. You are and you always will be.”

Now here is where I felt the book had a chance to go from good to great; the flashbacks. The flashbacks to their youth is told in a recap type of writing, that’s not quite past tense and not quite fully recap. Basically you get a retelling of what happened but you’re not fully taken back to the moment…if that even makes sense. This is what effectively took me out of the story a bit. Had the story given an actual flashback as opposed to the recap, it would have been more effective in my opinion. As it was, I felt like I was more on the outside looking in as opposed to truly being a part of the story. I also wished that their past was fleshed out a lot more. As it was, I found it difficult to truly connect to the why’s of their game. They have feelings for one another, but they continue to date other people and they’re never officially together. I can write it off as youthful stupidity or naivety, but there’s never a good enough reason that we’re given. Had this part of the story been fleshed out more, I think I would have been able to connect to it better.

I loved the characters and their romance. Lake and Callum are both very compelling characters. I knew right away that I’d fall for Callum, and I really did. His struggle for his feelings for Lake were like a live-wire you feel though the entire book. He wants to hate her, but he simply can’t because a part of him has always loved her even when he hated her. I didn’t expect for the story to be as deep as it was. It was certainly no shallow hate/love thing they had going on. Lake had her reasons for doing what she did, and the reasons you get piece by piece throughout the story. I really found myself wishing that these reasons were once again told in the form of a true flashback by really taking the reader back to that day as opposed to getting it in the form of a recap, as I felt that this would have made the actual story a lot more compelling. As it was, I found myself going in and out of the story since I did struggle a bit with the transitions of present to “recap” back to present again. For me, it messed with the flow of the story.

I did however really enjoy the author’s voice and writing style. I loved the story itself, my quibble aside, and I can say I would read any future books from this author. If you’re looking for a sexy hate/love story with an intense alpha hero and the heroine that brings him to his knees, this is a book you want to check out. My quibble aside, this is definitely a book I’d recommend and enjoyed myself quite a bit. It may not have been perfect, but it was perfect for my mood and it hit the spot just right.

Review4 starsSuite 269-DGR

My first step into spinsterhood: making innocent children cry. Next up, adopting a dozen cats, buying a big vibrator, and learning the etiquette of prissy repressiveness. God, the bitterness and anger were overwhelming.

Know what I love? When a book manages to catch me by complete surprise, pleasantly so, and end up being so much more than I had thought it would be. Suite 269 was that book for me. Witty, laugh out loud hilarious, and sexy as all hell, I read it in practically one sitting with a goofy smile on my face for the entire time (And some ice for my ovaries on standby) It’s not often that I’ll tell you that my favorite thing about a book was the heroine. And by that, I mean it almost never freaking happens. Unless the heroine manages to channel my inner sarcastic pervert. I mean the woman’s favorite cartoon was Pinky and The Brain for the love of god! We need to be besties here! And if you don’t know what that cartoon is, shame on you, and don’t speak to me again until you watch it, mkay?!

I could swear if I looked on my shoulder in that moment I’d see a horny little devil prodding me with an enormous penis-shaped pitchfork, chanting, “Kiss him. Kiss him. Kiss him.”

What if you met a man that promised to make all your deepest, darkest fantasies come true? No questions, no judgement. That’s precisely the chance that Lexa Novak gets. But this book is so much more than just that. So let’s set the scene, shall we?

Lexa is coming home from her bachelorette party when she walks in on her fiance letting her coworker use his penis as a pogo stick….for her vagina. You get me? He’s cheating on, mkay. So with her pride wounded and her upcoming nuptuals in tatters, Lexa tries to focus on the one thing she still has going for her…her job and the conference she has to attend for it. Even if she has to drown herself in alcohol to get through it.
Enter stage right, Jameson Holt. The son of the man that owns the magazine she works as a lowly fact checker for, and her boss. Did I happen to mention that he makes her ovaries scream in delight with his mere present alone?
Because the man is pure sex on a stick. But that’s all the detail you’ll be getting from because what’s the fun in that? The best part of the reading experience here is to find out how all these puzzle pieces click together.

This was such a fun and sexy read. I was laughing my fool head off for basically the entire first half of the book. Their banter and the text messages alone are enough to make you giggle. But then add into the mix Lexa’s self depreciating and hilarious inner monologue, and you got yourself a hell of a winner. I’d suggest keeping some ice for those ovaries for the second half, however.

While there were parts of the book that were fairly predictable, it never took a thing away from it. At least not from me. I loved it from beginning to finish. It’s not often that I’ll find a book that can appease my inner pervert AND make me laugh all in one.
I’ve read and loved this author’s PNR titles, (Mad World) but this was my first contemporary romance from her and it sure as hell will not be my last. Clearly I’ve been missing out and I need to go check out the woman’s entire backlist. If you’re looking for a fun, witty, and uber sexy read, you really can’t go wrong with this one.

Review3 starsLove Burns- DirtyGirlRomance

I went to war for her. Now it’s her turn

I fell hard for Deacon “The Hitman” Love when I first met him in Love Hurts while Frankie took me a bit of warming up to. In Love Burns, the tables turn and I found myself struggling with some of Deacon’s decisions while I loved seeing Frankie come into her own and find her inner strength and voice.

One thing that soured my enjoyment was this (I’ll spoiler tag even though it is something that’s revealed in the first chapter just in case you want to go in completely blind)(HIGHLIGHT TO VIEW SPOILER) [While separated from Frankie, Deacon sleeps with two models while on a drunken bender and doesn’t remember anything when he wakes up. The whole time before he’s pinning for Frankie and the whole time after he’s jealous of any man that looks her way and professes his undying love and declares that he’ll fight for her. Now I don’t have a problem with the hero sleeping around….if it fist the story. Here, while it may or may not have fit, I found that it cheapened his feelings for her. All this talk of love this and love that, and then his internal thought is “if I can’t remember, it’s like it didn’t happen, right?” Don’t get me wrong, he acknowledges that what he did is wrong, but it still left a sour taste in my mouth](END SPOILER)

The majority of the book is spent with Deacon and Frankie continuing to deal with the threat on her life from her ex fiance and the mystery surrounding the case he has that led to all the trouble. All the while they’re working through their issues. I hate to say that I found parts of the book to be slightly cliche and dragging, to a point where I found myself skimming the sex scenes. Deacon simply wasn’t as endearing to me as he was in the first book, but he was no less intense.

There was something that happened at the end that should have garnered some emotion from me, and yet I found myself questioning the shock factor of it and why it needed to happen. On the one hand, it drove the plot somewhat….on the other hand, it almost felt like it wasn’t needed. I also absolutely hated the way that Deacon dealt with it in respect to Frankie. After everything they’ve already went through, I wanted something more from him. Frankie was beyond understanding, and I found her to be too understanding with this considering the circumstances.

My issues aside, it was still an enjoyable read. I suppose in my months of waiting after the crazy cliffhanger in book 1, I may have built my hopes up too high. As you can clearly see, most people really enjoyed this one. Perhaps I’m too critical and just wasn’t in the right mood for it? Perhaps my issue was that I forgot a few details from the first book in the wait and maybe that would have helped me connect more? Whatever the case may be, while this book wasn’t a total winner for me, I’m still a fan of this author and would gladly read any of her books in the future.

Don’t miss book 1!
