Jasmine Taveras is the reason Sarge Purcell grabbed his six-string and bailed the hell out of New Jersey four years ago. She’s the fuel for every song he’s ever written—each one laced with bitter, hard-edged, hungry lust. Now, with his hugely successful band on temporary hiatus, Sarge is determined to prove to Jasmine that this “kid” turned into every inch the man she’s always needed…

Men are slim pickings for a single factory girl in Hook, New Jersey…until tall, broad-shouldered hotness walks—or rather storms—into Jasmine’s life. Sarge’s return shouldn’t affect her this way. He’s her best friend’s much younger kid brother, and the kind of rough, gritty, sexiness Jasmine has no right to taste for herself. Even if he lets her.

But lust is a blinding, insatiable force. And when it crashes, it will take both Sarge and Jasmine down with it…

DGR’S Ultimate List of Rockstars

DGR-Rockstar Banner

A little over two months ago, I did my first feature with my Ultimate List of Dirty Talkers and I was beyond thrilled to see how much you guys loved it! Since then, I’ve made this into a monthly feature that you’ll find me post on the 3rd Saturday of every month. Each month I’ll be bringing you a new Ultimate List in your most voted categories; bikers, anti-heroes, cops, cowboys, etc. You name it, I’ll do it.

But this month it’s all about ROCKSTARS!

Rockstar_Logo_07

Now you’ll find I don’t discriminate on my list; I’ll have country stars, male rockstars, and some female ones as well. You know I like to keep things well-rounded 😉 So without further ado, let’s get into it! As always my list will contain all the books I’ve read and enjoyed, and at the bottom I’ll include the ones that were recommended to me but I haven’t had a chance to read just yet. And of course, I’d love to hear from you all in comments if there’s a favorite of yours that didn’t make my list. You know I love me my book recs!

The one that started it all...

“He said I was his heart, and you don’t leave your heart behind. You can’t live without your heart.”

Truth be told I have a total love hate relationship with this book. This was the very first Rockstar that I read and it really doesn’t get much better than Kellan freaking Kyle. Unfortunately, I also spent a large chunk (read: all) of this book fantasizing about the heroine being killed off. I couldn’t help myself. I hated that woman with the fire of the worst type of venereal disease. True Story. And yet like a car wreck that you can’t look away from, I couldn’t stop reading. It was just one of those books. It was also the book that effectively turned me off love triangles for years to come…but we won’t talk about that now LOL.

I still haven’t brought myself to read the rest of the series, but I’m working on it. Especially since all my friends absolutely LOVED Griffin’s book, Untamed.

Books 1-3 are all Kellan and Keira. Thoughtful was basically Thoughtless but in Kellan’s POV. Untamed is Griffin’s book.

The one with Jake Wethers...

“Jake once said on stage that Jonny was the mighty in their storm, and now I see that Jake is my mighty storm. He’s broken and complex, and no one knows him like I do, or ever will. He needs me. He’s my storm to calm. And I’m going to spend the rest of my life doing just that.”

You’re probably thinking right now, another book where the heroine has a boyfriend when she meets the hero? And you liked it?! And the answer is yes indeed, dirty birds. I liked it very much. First, it’s this

It’s been twelve years since Tru Bennett last saw Jake Wethers, her former best friend and boy she once loved.

I love the mere set up of this particular trope. Jake Wethers, if you’re not acquainted, is the tattooed bad boy lead singer of The Mighty Storm and the man to get ovaries tingling the world over. This was yet another one of my earliest rockstar reads and I loved it! Would I rate it the same if I read it today, I’m not sure. But hundreds of books later and I still remember everything about this one, so that truly goes to show you something, right?

Books 1 and 2 are Jake and Tru’s story. Though if you’d like to read The Mighty Storm, you easily can since it gives a very satisfying HEA. Book 3 in this series are new characters; Tom Carter and Lyla Summers. Tom is the manwhore bassist for The Mighty Storm, and Lyla  is the lead singer of the band Vintage which just signed with TMS records.

The one with the kinky rockstars...

He put his fingertips against her forehead.
“You must be at least this tall to ride The Beast…
Secure your belongings and keepy your arms and legs around the ride at all times.”

Holy mother of melting ovaries, this series! I don’t think any ovaries can survive these kinky rockers. There’s something for everyone; MMF, voyeurism, public sex, BDSM, and did I mention MMF threesomes? It’s fair to mention that one twice. I read these hot little numbers as they were being released, and for some strange reason they were released out of order. I still don’t know why, so don’t ask me. But the entire series is now released so you can read it in the order it’s meant to be read it. I loved each book in this series, though I’d say Sed Lionheart’s story in Rock Hard (I do love me a good second chance romance) and Trey Mills’s story in Double Time (Holy MMF threesome, batman) were my top favorites!

Each book in this series is a standalone with a different couple and their HEA. All except for Sinners at the Altar, which are  four complete wedding stories, each about a different member of the rock band Sinners and need to be read after all the other books.

The Sinners On Tour spinoff...

“What are you going to do to me?”
“Lamb, the question you should be asking is what aren’t you going to do to me?”

Exodus End is the rock band that we were first introduced to in Sinners On Tour and it’s also about that time that Olivia Cunning teased us with Dare. But sadly it looks like Dare’s book will probably be last in the series so we start things off with the bassist, Logan Schmidt. At almost 500 pages, this book is long, but I never wanted it to end. It’s laugh out loud funny and set your ovaries on fire hot.

No one writes a sexy Rockstar romance quite like Olivia Cunning.

Oh and in case you’re wondering, you can easily read this book without having read SoT first. I’d say the sexual escapades in this one are a touch tamer than in that series, but it’s just as hot!

The novella series...

“My goal is to make you scream my name. Give me what I want, but make me work for it.”

Now I call this a spinoff but it really isn’t. This is yet another rockstar series from the awesome Olivia Cunning, but these are novellas of around 100 pages as opposed to the full length novels that the previous two series are.

Per Olivia Cunning’s own words about this series:

The Sole Regret series is an ongoing serial series. Each novella spans the course of one night and is about a different band member. All the band member’s stories weave together, so characters reappear in all of the stories. If you have a favorite band member or a favorite couple they will be revisited several times in the rotation of the books. I do hope you love them all!
The order of band member rotation is Gabe, Adam, Jacob, Owen, and Kellen.

The one with Leo Nash...

“What are you doing later?”
“I won’t be doing you.”
“Uh, I wasn’t offering, honey.” I turn around to see Leo smiling smugly. “I was wondering if you’d like me to take you to have that stick pulled out of your ass.”

Admittedly,  The With Me In Seattle has been an on and off for me. Some of the books in it were entirely too sweet for my particular tastes, and some of the books really worked for me. Kristen Proby tends to write sweet, but steamy, contemporary romance and that sometimes works for me and sometimes doesn’t.

In the case of Rock With Me it totally worked for me. I mean, how can you possibly not love Leo Nash. The man was absolutely drool worthy. From his tats to that filthy mouth of his, I loved everything about this. I won’t list the other books in this series as none of the others were rockstars. But if you’re looking for some steamy and sweet contemporary, give it a whirl. It just may work for you.

The one by Kristen Ashley...

“I had to soften him up because, for whatever reason, all the Rock Chicks had an alternate Hot Bunch guy, Indy’s was Eddie. Roxie’s was Vance. Jules was Luke. Ava’s was Lee. Mine was Mace.”

It’s no secret that I’m a HUGE fan of all things Kristen Ashley. And when I say huge fan, I mean borderline stalkerish. I adore everything the woman writes. Something about her alphas just does it for me. I don’t even care that they all speak in one word sentences that mostly consist of “Babe”. Nope. I will never have enough of them.

Now don’t let the Rock Chick title fool you, this series is not about Rock Stars. It’s about women that call themselves “Rock Chicks” but not in that band-y version, you hear? Rock Chick Reckoning was the one exception to this rule, because Stella is the lead singer and lead guitarist of The Blue Moon Gypsie. She was also madly in love with Mace…until he dumps her unexpectedly and breaks her heart. Now that her life is in danger, Mace needs to protect her and of course that ultimate leads him to know that he wants her back, only Stella is having none of that.

This book was everything I love about KA and one of my top favorites in this series (after Luke and Ava in Rock Chick Revenge, and Sadie and Hector “Oh My God” Chavez in Rock Chick Regret)

The one with the second chance romance...

“I thought for sure we’d spend forever together. I thought our love was one of a kind. I would almost be okay if he had met someone else and fallen in love, but he didn’t. He just left. He said he was suffocating.”

Forever My Girl is book 1 in Heidi’s New Adult Romance, Beaumont Series. I haven’t had a chance to catch up with the rest of the books and have only read Forever My Girl but boy did I love this book. I’m a sucker for a good second chance romance and this one surely delivered. It was angsty, swoony, a touch of sexy, and I loved every page of it!

While each book in the series focuses on a different 4225 West band member, I highly recommend reading them in order. The final book in this series, My Kind of Forever, is the continuation of Liam and and Jojo’s story from book 1.

The one with the angst...

“I love you because I can be honest with you. I trust you. I love you because you’ve made me see I’m more than I thought.”

If you’ve read any book by Barbara Elsborg, then you already know she has this fabulous style of writing that combines some delicious angst with quirky humor and sizzling hot romance. Strangers is a standalone romance about two lost souls that meat each other during their absolute rock bottom. What happens when an attempted suicide brings two strangers crashing into each other and gives them a reason to live?

Why is this on my rockstars, you ask? Well because the hero just happens to be a very famous British pop-star and now movie star.

The one with the PNR twist...

“His lips touched mine again, breathing me in like I was his air, then he tore his mouth from mine; panting. “Please Grace, whatever it is you’re going after, please try to find it here in me. I will try my best to be the man that you need me to be.”

A soulmates story unlike any you’ve ever read. Even if you’re not into PNR, you need to check this out. While a PNR element does exist here in the form of angels and such, but it’s very minimal and sure to please even those that don’t particularly like the genre.

Grace has been looking for her soulmate for years. Now home after the death of her brother, she finds home is very different. Her best friend has a new boyfriend, and that boyfriend has a friend; Shane Maxton: bad boy, tattooed rock god, eye candy extraordinaire. And he’s also New York’s city most arrogant asshole. So why is she drawn to him.

This is a series of three books that absolutely must be read in order.

The one that caught me by surprise...

“Love doesn’t always make sense. To the person in it or to the people around them. The falling can be an emotional, chaotic whirlwind. The landing jarring and eye opening. But if two people are really in love, there’s nothing in this world that can overcome it. Even if they can’t be together, love doesn’t cease.”

You know when you start a book by a new to you author and you have no idea what to expect, and it manages to completely blow you away? That’s been the entire Luminescent Juliet series for me.

Don’t let the covers fool you, some may look a little unappealing but the books are absolutely amazing! I’ve been a huge fan of this New Adult romance since book 1. Each book is a different member of the Luminescent Juliet band and their HEA, and while you can easily read them as standalones, I highly recommend you read them in order simply because you’ll get to know each member before their own book. It has just enough steam to appease this pervy reader, wonderful writing, a touch of angst, and a rock band! What else can you ask for?

The one with the boys of Oblivion...

“We’re going to burn out,” she said against his mouth an couldn’t stop herself from tasting him again. “Nothing good will come of this.”
“Harper, nothing but good is going to come from this.”

I read this series by pure chance a couple years ago and I have been a rather rabid fan since. It’s everything I love in a romance. So much so that I swear it feels like it was custom written just for me. It’s angsty, with just that touch of gritty that I so love, super sexy, and freaking addicting!

Rocked, book 1 in the series is a complete HEA for the couple with a later follow-up novella in Rock, Rattle & Roll. But be warned, each book after is a full length novel that will end with a cliffy and a novella soon after that completes the couple’s HEA. Each book follows a different member of the boys of Oblivion and I do not recommend reading these books out of order. They are much more enjoyable read in order.

The one with the swoons...

“You’ve got all this…this love – no, it’s louder than love. It’s passion and beauty built up inside you that deserves to burst out.”

Now I am not typically a reader that goes for sweet, but something about this amazingly written contemporary romance just worked for me. It’s swoony, it’s sweet, it’s a little emotional, and it’s incredibly realistic.  Adrian “Digger” Graves is a down on his luck rocker who got his claim to fame in the 80s. Now he finds solace at the bottom of a bottle and still searches for his long lost muse.

Enter Katrina Lewis, a single mother and widower, that’s just trying to raise her little girl while still dealing with the tragic death of her beloved husband. The unlikeliest of couples made for the most unforgettable of romances. I simply adored this book. The novella, Deeper Than Dreams concludes the story of Kat and Adrian with the perfect bonus epilogue and not to be missed. Softer Than Steele, is a different couple. That book features Adrian’s former bandmate, Rick Rottenberg.

The one with the BDSM...

He would show the lovely Ms. Easton exactly why she wouldn’t be able to walk away from him after one night.
Because that was definitely not an option.
One taste was supposed to satisfy the craving. But Oakley was wasn’t cake, she was heroin. And he was fucking hooked.

I’ve been a huge fan of Roni Loren’s Loving on the Edge series since first discovering it years ago. It’s a super sexy BDSM centered romance. But it’s not overwhelmingly so either. Meaning that while the characters do belong to a BDSM club called The Ranch, it’s not too heavy on the BDSM elements. But they certainly are there and Roni’s Doms are nothing short of swoon worthy.

This is book 8 in the series, but you can easily enjoy this as a standalone. I would recommend you read Not Until You (Loving on the Edge #4), because that’s the book where Pike was first introduced.

What happens when the bad boy drummer of a rock band sets his sights on a woman that wants nothing to do with the music industry? A whole lot of sparks and fireworks!

The one with the Stage Dive boys...

Love isn’t always smooth or straightforward. It can be messy and painful. Doesn’t mean it isn’t still the most incredible thing that can ever happen to you.

Does this series even need an introduction or a reason for being on my list? If you haven’t heard of it, I’m pretty sure you’ve been living under a rock. But trust me when I tell you it’s an absolute must read. I’ve loved every book in the series, but of course the bad boy lead singer Jimmy in Lead was my very favorite.

This series is completed. Each book is a complete standalone about each member of the band and their HEA. I highly recommend reading in order, you’d enjoy it that much more 😉

The one that was dark and gritty...

Love is like a series of improbable, lonely notes landing together in meaningful chaos. Where every channel carries a rhythm that conveys an expression of emotion. It doesn’t feel flat or fake or hollow. It’s not exaggerated with overtones. The complexity might feel organized, but the creation is never controlled.

Beneath the Burn is the book that I first discovered the amazing talent that is Pam Godwin. Categorized as a standalone romantic thriller, it’s certainly a book that has quite an edge. It’s a little dark and a whole lot gritty, but tying it all together is this incredible romance I’ll not soon forget.

Jay Mayard is a rock god and tortured soul. His demons and mysterious past is what kept me glued to the pages. If you haven’t read this sexy and gritty book, you need to check it out!

The one that was a Brazen...

She’d built her whole world around him once, when he was the only person she could feel anything for. The only person she could trust. When he had left, it had shattered her.

It’s no secret that I’m a Brazen junky. I love these steamy little numbers and when all else fails, they always hit the spot. But like any category romance, sometimes they can all blend into one another. Not the case with Drive Me Crazy. This was a super entertain hate-to-lust trope about a classic pianist and the bad boy keyboardist for Shaken Dirty, the hottest rock band on the scene. And yes, it is as good as it sounds 😉

While it is book two in the Shaken Dirty series, you can easily read this as a standalone.

The one with the boys of Lush...

I know almost instantly- this is it- I’m done. This woman will either be my salvation or the death of me. There is no question. I’ve lost control now that I’ve touched her. There’s no going back, and she’s the most spectacular thing I’ve ever experienced.

Holy angst, batman! This caught me completely off guard. I did not expect this to be as good as it was. To say that the guys of Lush are very much f-ed up would be a mild understatement. Each of these men have their own issues, but none quite as bad as Joss Jamison, the lead singer of the hottest rock bad, Lush. He’s made his share of mistakes through the years, but nothing as bad as the one that cost him everything; his band, his best friend, and his sanity. Drowning in a sea of regret, the last thing he expects is to meet the woman that will change everything for him.

Each book in this fantastic series focuses on a different band member of Lush and while you may enjoy them as standalones, I recommend reading in order. There is a story arc that builds from the first book and continues through the last, and you’d appreciate the books that much more.

The one that made me cringe and LOL at the same time...

“In this nasty-ass strip club bathroom full of pissing dudes and possible rogue ejaculators, Shades is no longer some guy I love fucking. He’s some guy I fucking love.”

This fucking book was fucked the fuck up. Fucked. Up. I tells ya! I think I cringed, laughed, and threw up in my mouth a little…all at the same time as reading this. Romance? I don’t fucking think so. Well I guess it fucking is, since there is a couple and their HEA. But really, this is a satyrical romp about one very fucked up rockstar heroine with an overactive sex drive and the hero that plows through her meat curtains. Oh and if terms like cum spritzer, meat curtains, his pink soldier, and her pudding trench bother you, this book is sure as fuck not for you.

The one with the country star...

With a synopsis like this, how could it not intrigue?

After Kylie’s dad dies in a freak accident, he leaves her with nothing other than her crazy step-mother, Darla, and the ability to play guitar. When Darla kicks Kylie out and she loses her job all in the same day, she hops a bus to Nashville determined to make her late father’s dreams come true. Waitressing and saving her pennies to record a demo, her big break comes when she’s asked to join a tour going down the tubes with once platinum album-selling country music superstar Trace Corbin. But touring with Trace is hardly a dream come true since he’s pretty much drinking his career down the drain. If Kylie can’t pull Trace out of his rut, he’ll pull her and her dreams down with him.

This New Adult romance completely enraptured me. I loved everything about it. It doesn’t have this overwhelming angst that most NA books these days. The characters are endearing and the romance is swoony. This is a series that follows the same two characters, so it’s not meant to be read out of order.

The one that was a trilogy...

Whisky beats and a hard rain save me tonight.
If you only knew what it cost me to fight.
The taste of your memory reminds me.
That you’re anything but mine.

You may know Taryn Elliot as half of the writing duo for the Lost In Oblivion series I mentioned above. When she’s not giving us deliciously angsty rockstars with her writing partner in crime, Cari Quinn, she also writes books on her own. Her When You’re Gone trilogy was one of those books.

If you’re looking for angst, sexy as sin rockstars, and some twists and turns that will leave you reeling, this is a trilogy you need to check out! Since this is a continuing story for the same two characters, it is not meant to be read out of order.

The one the love triangle I actually liked..

I’m losing my mind. I’m sinking, drowning, and on fire all at once. I’m split down the middle, torn in half by two different men, two different bodies pushing and pulling me in all directions, breaking me down and then lifting me up again, shoving me into the fire and soothing my scorching flesh with their kisses that act as a balm.

Yes, you actually read that right. Me, the self professed love triangle avoider actually liked this one. I couldn’t believe it either. Maybe because this was written by the evil mastermind that is Carmen Jenner? Maybe because I didn’t have homicidal tendencies toward the heroine? But probably it had to do with the sexy as hell rockstars, the clever writing, the scorching sex scenes….and did I mention the scorching sex scenes?

The one that started an addiction...

18068029

“I’m scared.”
Logan stared at me with eyes that were cold, dark, and without a spark of…anything.
“You should be.”

This was so much more than a rockstar. Truth be told, while the men of this series are part of a famous rock band, Tear Asunder, that’s not the predominant part of the story. Oh no. It’s so SO much more. It’s gritty, and twisted, and dark, and deliciously sexy. It’s exactly the kind of dark romance I like and I gobbled this up like addict that I was. This was the book and series that made me discover the pure awesome that is Nashoda Rose and I haven’t looked back since. The woman is the queen of grit, and she writes some unforgettable alphas. If you haven’t met the boys of Tear Asunder yet, I highly recommend you get acquainted.

Swoon. Just that line and I want to read this book all over again. I loved this sexy new adult romance. I accidentally stumbled onto Bad Rep back when it just released and devoured it in one sitting. I love me some angst and if you’re a fan of the NA angst, this certainly had the delicious kind.

The one that was the BDSM-y novella...

It felt good to give in, to surrender. He rewarded her with more pleasure. Sex with him felt like embracing a thunderstorm, riding a wild bronc.

This is a novella that was a part of Shayla Black’s Wicked Lovers series, which is a super sexy BDSM romance series. This novella is part of the 1001 Dark Nights series and features a character that was first introduced in Decadent (Wicked Lovers #2), but you don’t have to have read any of the previous books to enjoy this one. It’s easily read as a standalone. It’s a sexy little quickie you can spend a great evening with!

Did I mention that the hero is an international pop star with a penchant for some kink? Oh. Yes.

The one with the boys of Reckless Beat...

“He squeezed her neck and rested his forehead against hers, “What is it with you, Allie? Why can’t I take my mind off you? I can’t take a single breath without wishing I was touching you”

I discovered this series when I grabbed this book as a freebie a few years back. I did not expect it to be as good as it was. So of course I then had to go and buy the rest of the series and binge on them.

Romantic Suspense Series & Standalones you need to read!

DGR-Suspense

My reading addiction first started with PNR and the BDB series by JR Ward. But soon after I discovered Romantic Suspense and found myself a whole different addiction. I binged on this genre and to this day it continues to be one of my favorites. I love a sexy, heart-pounding and action-packed romance, so I’ve compiled a list of some of my very favorite series and standalones in this genre that I think everyone needs to check out. Whether you’re a seasoned RS reader or you’re hoping to dip your toes in this genre, there’s sure to be a book to fit your fancy. Please note, these are only the RS books that I’ve personally read. I love fellow reader recommendations, so if your favorite is not on my list, drop me a line in the comment section below. I’d love to hear from you!

Romantic Suspense Series

I-Team by Pamela Clare

Heat Rating = 7.5

This series has been a top favorite of mine and it’s still going strong 7 books later. It’s super sexy and easily one of my most recommended books when someone wants a great RS read. Though it starts out a bit weak with the first book, it picks up steam very quickly with the second. That’s not to say I didn’t like the first book in the series, but it gets even better with the later books. Having said all that, Hunter from Unlawful Contact is mine and mine alone. I refuse to share him! When you meet the man, you’ll know why. I just recently finished  the most recent release, Seduction Game (I-Team #7) and that was a huge 5 star! This series only continues to get better and Pamela cannot write these books quick enough. If you’re looking to dip your toes in RS, this is the series I highly recommend you start with.

Tempting SEALs series by Lora Leigh

Heat Rating = 10

I’m a bit nostalgic when it comes to this author, because she was the one that first introduced me to erotic romance. Wild Card from her Elite OPs series is still one of my top favorites. But I’ll get to that series in a bit.

If you haven’t read anything by this author, then what you need to know is she writes some uber and I really do mean UBER alphas. They’re crazy possessive, jealous, and of course dirty talkers. Tempting SEALs is as I’m sure you can guess centered around men that are part of an elite SEAL team; constantly facing danger, most of which from the women that inevitably bring them to their knees. She’s had a few other series after Tempting SEALs and Elite OPs, but none have ever compared, so these two are the ones I highly recommend checking out.

Elite OPs series by Lora Leigh

Heat Rating = 10

Elite Ops is the spin-off series from Tempting SEALs, though you don’t have to have read TS in order to enjoy EO. There are main characters from the Tempting SEALs that make an appearance as secondary characters in Elite OPs, so you’d appreciate those more having read the series first. However, there’s plenty of background given should you want to jump into this series first.

Having said that, I didn’t love all the books in this series like I did in TS. I have to say that the last 2 books were fairly lackluster. But book 1, Wild Card is easily one of my favorite books to date. This was THE romance book that first got me hooked on erotic romances. It was the book I first dipped my toes in the erotic romance genre and I’m still nostalgic about it. It’s a second chance romance and the hero is brooding, tortured. The heroine is sassy and takes none of his bs. Even if that’s the only book you read in this series, it’s a book you need to check out!

KGI series by Maya Banks

Heat Rating = 6.5

I’ve been a huge fan of Maya Banks since first reading her Sweet series, which was a super erotic, kinky BDSM series. Then she released her first KGI book and I was in love! It’s nothing like her other books were, which means it’s sexy but not to the level of the Sweet series. It has just the right amount of steam to enhance the fantastic suspense.

I have loved the first five books in this series, but unfortunately somewhere around book 6 this series began to lose some of it’s steam for me. Some friends loved them, I sadly didn’t. Having recently finished book 10, I’m beyond let down. I cannot recommend books 1-5, though. Even if those are the only ones you read in this series, it’s worth it. They were absolutely fantastic. Book 1 is more emotional, with a beautiful second chance/lovers reunited theme. It’s less on the sexy times, but not to worry, because the next books definitely make up for it 😉

McClouds & Friends series by Shannon McKenna

Heat Rating = 9

Speaking of uber alphas the likes of Lora Leigh, meet the heroes of McClouds & Friends. These men are dirty talking alphaholes if ever there were some, but they are loyal and protective to a fault when it comes to their women. Even if they are unreasonably possessive in the process. But let’s not kid ourselves here, that’s exactly their appeal. This series is absolutely sizzling hot. I’d categorize it as erotic romantic suspense because those sex scenes are deliciously explicit. But it’s not just ovaries that get blown up, there’s plenty of action and suspense to make it for some entertaining reading. This series probably had some of the most villainous villains I’ve ever read. These people are FUBAR to sum it up. The characters are not perfect, but that’s also their appeal. It’s an addicting series and I’ve enjoyed every single book in it.

If you’re looking for some dirty talking uber alpha and crazy (and I mean CRAYZY) bad guys, you’ll want to check it out!

Masters and Mercenaries series by Lexi Blake

Heat Rating = 9

One of my all time favorite series EVER. I’m absolutely addicted to these DOMs and I never want this series to end. Let’s talk about this sizzling combination of scorching hot BDSM with heart-pounding suspense, shall we? If you haven’t read these books yet, you, my friend, are sorely missing out. While the first book didn’t exactly blow me away, don’t judge the rest of the series by it. Because not only are the books fantastic, they get better with each new book. And with 9 books in the series so far, that’s no small feat.

The series focuses on team of Black Ops specialists with a few CIA operatives thrown into the mix that are more mercanary that government sanctioned and each is a member of an exclusive BDSM club called Sanctum. Espionage and BDSM, what more can you ask for? The suspense and the action serve as the driver for the sizzling romance and all of it adds up to entirely unputdownable reads. I’ve loved every single book in this series. Without exception. I highly recommend reading these in order as there are villains that have story arcs throughout several books. While each book focuses on a different couplet that gets their HEA in the end, the story arc sometimes continues for several books. You’d appreciate it that much more reading it in order.

You’ll notice there’s a few novellas in the series as well. Those are fun and sexy little reads that I recommend too! Though they are not as action packed as the novels, they offer a little taste of the Sanctum life with a touch of suspense. You can read the series without the novellas without missing much, but why would you want to anyway? 😉

Mine series by Cynthia Eden

Heat Rating = 7

What is it about this author that just does it for me? Is it her brooding alphas? Her uncanny ability to work in unpredictable twists into every suspense story she writes? Her bad guys that never fail to make the hair on my arms stand on end? Or the incredibly passionate and erotic romance that weaves flawlessly into every single one of her books? I’m obsessed with everything that she writes. And while she has some incredibly sexy PNR books which I’ve loved, her Romantic Suspense is my crack. I have a few favorite RS series by her which I’ll list, but MINE happens to be at the very top of that.

Each book in the Mine series (with the exception of book 1 and 2, which are about the same couple) focuses on a different couple and their HEA. It also has a finished story arc so whatever villain is introduced, you get closure on it. The characters from the next books typically make an appearance in the previous ones, so it does help to read in order, though you can easily read them each as a standalone as well.

Last Chance Rescue (LCR) series by Christy Reece

Heat Rating = 6

I first discovered this series years ago back when I was still in my paperback reading stage. Suffice it to say I have the entire series in paperback simply because I heart it hard. The premise of the series revolves around Last Chance Rescue, Inc which is an organization that employs the most skilled and ruthless mercenaries in the world to help rescue innocent victims from some of the world’s deadliest and dangerous people and places.

Each book focuses on a different member of the LCR team finding love. Sometimes it’s with the victims they rescue, sometimes it’s with their fellow mercenaries. It’s suspenseful, action packed, and incredibly sensual. Though you can read each book as a standalone easily, I recommend reading in order since characters are introduced in previous books and you’d appreciate it more that way.

Christy Reece also wrote a spin-off series, titled LCR Elite. The premise of the series is basically the same as LCR, though it introduces a whole new slew of characters. It doesn’t quite pack the same steam for me as LCR did, but I still enjoyed both books that are in the series so far.

This series is a romantic suspense and mystery set in a small, fictional town of Midnight, Alabama. It focuses on the three sisters; Savannah, Samantha, and Sabrina Wilde as they try to solve their parents murder.

Each book introduces a new sister and her romantic interest with a finished HEA, while the mystery arc continues until the last book. So this is definitely a series you’ll want to read in order.

Men Who Walk the Edge of Honor series by Lori Foster

Heat Rating = 6

I’m a huge fan of all things Lori Foster. If you saw my Ultimate List of Fighter Romances, then you already know I loved her SBC Fighters and her Ultimate series. She’s the queen of contemporary.

Men Who Walk the Edge of Honor series is her Contemporary/Suspense series about Professional mercenaries and the women that bring them to their knees. Now it’s probably more contemporary than it is suspense, but there’s just the right amount suspense in it to still make my list. It has that signature Lori Foster sensuality and sure to please every palate, even if suspense is not quite your cuppa.

Love Undercover series by Lori Foster

Heat Rating = 6

Lover Undercover is the spin-off series from the Edge of Honor series, but you can easily start this series without having read EoH. The focus here is undercover officers and their romantic interests. Lori can really do no wrong in my eyes, and this series was just as good as the one it spun off from. Again, I’d categorize it more towards Contemporary Romance than suspense, but that right touch of action and suspense has once again landed it on my list.

Each book is easily read as a standalone.

The Bodyguards series by Cindy Gerard

Heat Rating = 6

No Romantic Suspense list can exist without the amazing Cindy Gerard. The woman is the queen of romantic suspense. Her military heroes are absolutely to die for. Pun intended.

The Bodyguard series is what first started  my obsession with this author and it continues to this day, which is why you’ll see two other series by her spotlighted on my list. As for The Bodyguards, here’s how Cindy herself describes the series:

No assignment is too big, too difficult, or too dangerous for E.D.E.N. Inc., a West Palm Beach security firm. But in these novels of romance and suspense, when it comes to their own personal relationships, the forces of E.D.E.N., Inc. soon find themselves in deep water and sinking fast. These bodyguards will not only guard your body: they’ll steal your heart and fulfill your deepest desires.

The Black Ops series by Cindy Gerard

Heat Rating = 6

The Black Ops is the spin off from Cindy’s Bodyguards series. Here you’ll find sexy as hell military heroes thrown deep into danger with a satisfying side of romance. This is easily my favorite series by this author to date and I’ve loved every single book in this series. And I really do mean every. single. book. They only continued to get better and better!

You don’t need to read The Bodyguards first in order to enjoy this series, but it certainly wouldn’t hurt. Each book is easily read as a standalone but I highly recommend reading in order since the characters do interconnect in the series and it helps build the excitement for each one since they’re introduced in previous books.

Bullet Catcher series by Roxanne St. Claire

Heat Rating = 6

The Bullet Catchers series is one that’s right up there for me with The Bodyguards. While most of Roxanne St. Claire’s books now lean towards straight contemporary romance, back in the day she wrote addictingly good Romantic Suspense. And addicted I was.

An elite team of bodyguards that protect the rich and famous, these men will guard the body during the day and make it shake at night. And it’s not all male Bullet Catchers either. The owner of the firm is one fierce female, that also gets a book in the series. It’s sexy, it’s action-packed, and it’s suspenseful. What else could you possibly ask for? Loved this entire series!

Hostile Operations Team series by Lynn Raye Harris

Heat Rating = 7

Holy book crack, batman! I lurve this incredibly sexy series from Lynn Raye Harris. Though it had a little of a slow start with the first book, it took off flying from then. Sinfully sexy Special Ops military and SEALs anyone? Oh yeah! I’ve read every single book in this series and can’t get enough. I devour them in one nail-biting sitting. The action is high paced and non-stop and it’s oh so sexy! Huge rec from me!

In case you’re wondering, the books totally match the ridiculously hot covers 😉

Passion For Danger trilogy by Nina Bruhns

Heat Rating = 8

I discovered the amazing Nina Bruhns a few years ago when I accidentally stumbled upon this series. I did not expect to read all three books back to back and have them be as smoking hot as they were. Because holy ovaries were they hot! I refer to this as a trilogy, since the story arc along with the main villain is something that continues through the three books and the third book is what has the final resolution. The characters are all interconnected, though each book focuses on a different couple and their HEA.

I strongly recommend reading these in order because you’ll appreciate the story that much more. If you like your romantic suspense sizzling hot, you need to check this author out!

Sin Brothers series by Rebecca Zanetti

Heat Rating = 7

I first discovered Rebecca Zanetti through her Brazen titles. Then I saw the cover for her then upcoming Forgotten Sins and I was intrigued. Yes, I’m shallow like that. But something about a man in a shirt stood out amongst the sea of shirtless covers. Then I read it and I was absolutely hooked.

This series has a very slight paranormal twist, but not in the way you’re thinking. It focuses on the four Dean brothers, who had unnatural powers genetically engineered into them by a black ops military unit. They were raised as soldiers that only know orders, until they escaped. Each book focuses on a different Dean brother and them finding their HEA but the main story arc continues throughout the series until the last book. So this is definitely a series that you need to read in order for the full effect.

Shadow Force series by Stephanie Tyler

Heat Rating = 7

A few years ago when I was on my PNR fix, I discovered the ACRO series written by Sydney Croft, which is the pen name for writing duo Stephanie Tyler and Larissa Ione. It was an incredibly erotic and addicting series which I was super bummed to see end. Then I discovered that Stephanie Tyler also had a romantic suspense series, Hard To Hold trilogy, which was another sexy little number though it didn’t pack quite the same punch. All this led me to her Shadow Force series and I found my holy grail!

Shadow Force is written in the same super sexy style that I was used to from Stephanie’s Sydney Croft days. It follows military heroes that work for Delta Force; a deadly and very black ops military group. Each book can be read as a standalone, though I highly recommend reading in order since each book in the series was absolutely fantastic.

Playing with Fire series by T.E. Sivec

Heat Rating = 7

T.E. Sivec is the pen name that the hilarious Tara Sivec writes her romantic suspense under. While not packing the humor that you may be used to from her Chocolate Lovers series, which are the books that I first discovered this author with, they’re great in a whole different way.

Swoon worthy military heroes, sexy romance and heart-poundind suspense all wrap up into some entertaining reads! While I had a bit of a rough start with the first book (A Beautiful Lie) in this series, which is actually free right now, the series certainly picked up with the next one. And it only continued to get better until the very end!

Burying Water series by K.A. Tucker

Heat Rating = 3

I fell in love with K.A. Tucker’s writing when she released Ten Tiny Breaths back in 2012. Man oh man did I love that book and the series that followed it. When I heard that she’ll be coming out with a romantic suspense, I jumped at the chance to read it.

Burying Water is nothing at all like her Ten Tiny Breaths series. It’s very character driven, with a heavy element of mystery and suspense, and in my opinion quite a slower pace. The romance is a bit more muted, but still very prevalent. It’s not quite as steamy as in TTB. Well, actually, I wouldn’t say it’s very steamy at all. But the story itself is enough to grab your interest. This coming from a self proclaimed smut slut. So while it’s not as steamy as my usual preference, I still love it and highly recommend to any other lovers of this genre!

The characters in the books do interconnect but they are very easily read as standalones.

Lost and Found series by J.M. Madden

Heat Rating = 6

Not often you’ll find a series about wounded veterans that’s not fluffed up or realistic, but this series certainly is. I strongly recommend reading the prequel novella, which is free right now on Amazon, The Embattled Road. This is the book that introduces each character and what leads them to be where they are. (Also, as of 11/13/15, Embattled Hearts is also free)

Basically, it’s the story of three embattled Marines that must deal with their devastating physical and emotional injuries in a world that seems to have turned against them. I’ve only read the prequel and the latter two books, but I can’t recommend them enough. Broody and tortured heroes always do the trick for me.

Linda Howard Must Reads!

I’ve been in a love affair with Linda Howard since I first discovered her with After The Night. That is the book that got me hooked on alpha-holes, and Gray Rouillard is a hero you will love to hate and then simply just love. While I highly recommend pretty much every single one of her books, the ones I will list below are my top favorites to this very day. I’ve read and re-read them at least 5 times each. They are my go-to rec for all things romantic suspense. The suspense is nail biting and the romance is steamy. What’s not to love?

Flash Point by Brooke Blaine

25522285

Brooke Blaine first hit my radar with the super sexy Desperate Man trilogy that she co-wrote with the fabulous Ella Frank. From that taste, I knew that she’d be the author to watch out for. So when she told me she’s coming out with a romantic suspense standalone, I was beyond thrilled and itching to get my grabby little hands on it.

Flash Point was unlike any book I had read. It was sexy, yes, but it was the story that truly grabbed me. Have you ever read a book and have it unfold before your eyes like a movie reel? Because that’s what happened with me here. The characters just came alive with every word. It had just that little bit of edge to it that I like and filled with enough twists and turns to have your head reeling at the end.

Dirty Ties by Pam Godwin

24359128

You may have heard of Pam Godwin for her dark romance standalone; Beneath The Burn, or her dark romance series; Deliver. That’s how I first discovered her anyway. And if you’re a dark romance junky like me, I highly recommend you check those titles out.

Dirty Ties is very different from any of her other books, though. It’s a full standalone and it’s not dark. It’s an edgy and sexy romantic suspense that will keep you on your toes and edge of your seat form beginning to finish. Illegal motorcycle racing, vendettas, and smoking hot sex all compile together for one unputdownable read.

So there you have it. A list packed full of some of my favorite favorite romantic suspense books and series. Have I missed some of your favorites? I love recommendations! So please feel free to leave me a comment below and tell me which ones I should check out!

Love Burns where I want to be
About the Author
Mandi Beck has been an avid reader all of her life. A deep love for books always had her jotting down little stories on napkins, notebooks, and her hand. As an adult she was further submerged into the book world through book clubs and the epicness of social media. It was then that she graduated to writing her stories on her phone and then finally on a proper computer.
A nursing student, mother to two rambunctious and somewhat rotten boys, and stepmom to two great girls away at college, she shares her time with her husband in Chicago where she was born and raised. Mandi is a diehard hockey fan and blames the Blackhawks when her deadlines are not met.
Love Hurts is her debut novel and she is currently working on the next in the series along with whatever other voices are clamoring for attention in her mind.

Flashback Friday: To the book that started my angst addiction

Flashback Friday-Angst

The only reason you brought me here tonight was because you thought it would appease me. Throw the vicious dog a bone and it’ll soon be eating out of your hand!”

“More like vicious bitch,” he muttered beneath his breath and when he realized that she had heard him, he shrugged unrepentantly. “If you’re going to be using animal metaphors, you may as well get it right.”

So if you follow my blog or my reviews then you already know that I’m a self professed angst whore. I’m talking make it hurt so good kind of angst! The having me deciding whether to reach for the nearest bottle of booze or a xanax kind of angst. The rip my hair out and scream at the ceiling then rock myself in a corner while babbling incoherently kind of angst. Basically, unless it leaves me feeling like I need to be carted off to the nearest institution after I’m done reading it didn’t angst me enough, mkay?

I think you catch my point here. I love me some angst. So a few weeks ago I gots to thinking, when was it that it hit me just how MUCH I enjoy the angsty reads? Does it track back to a particular book? So I went on to Goodreads and scrolled…and scrolled some more…and kept scrolling and lo and behold it all started right. Here. With this book.

17346553

No one had ever looked at her and seen perfection—until now.

Delicate, titian-haired Theresa Noble has met her father’s associates in the past, but the gorgeous, Italian-born Sandro De Lucci leaves her speechless. Eighteen months into their marriage, however, Sandro has turned to ice. Desperate to escape a relationship that has proven to be as stubbornly passionate as it is cold and hateful, Theresa summons up the courage to ask for a divorce. But before he’ll grant her request, Sandro demands something from Theresa: a son.

The stalemate sickens her. Never mind that Sandro has yet to introduce Theresa to the large family that means so much to him. Or that Theresa overhears her husband on the phone with a mystery woman. Most damning is that Theresa senses, in Sandro’s treatment of her, the behind-the-scenes machinations of Jackson Noble, her cruel father. From the depths of her anxiety, Theresa must seek an empowering truth about the husband who calls her, with such cold affection, his cara, his beloved.

Now don’t let the cover or even the synopsis fool you here, this book is angsty with a capital A. It’s also a total guilty pleasure read. Alessandro is a grade A asshole for a good chunk of the book and I gobbled it up like the angst starved whore that I am. It was seeeeeeew gewd.

I’m your husband…”
“No. You are not my husband,” she interrupted in a voice thickened with hatred and tears. “You have never been my husband. A husband loves, honours and cherishes! A husband is a lover and a champion….Look into the next room if you want to see what a real husband is, because you are no such thing!”

It’s like Harlequin presents meet angst fest. I mean, total guilty pleasure. If you’re read it then you know EXACTLY what I’m talking about. And if you haven’t, I’m really not sure what you’re waiting for. This is not a fluffy read by any means. We have an arranged marriage, an asshole husband that thinks he knows who his wife is and treats her in kind, and a wife that’s the innocent stuck in a web of deception and lies. Oh, then we also have the epic grovel to beat all grovels? Can it possibly tick off any more of my YES buttons? I ask you?!

Do you remember the book that started your obsession with angst? What about your favorite angsty read? I’d love to hear about all of it in the comments below 😉

Luc is out back when we get there, positioning Adirondack chairs around the crackling firepit. The weather is slightly cool, with a strong breeze off the lake. He’s wearing a black v-neck t-shirt with a pair of beige shorts and a dark plaid shirt tied around his waist. He looks like a hipster model or lead singer for a grunge band from the 90s and as usual, it’s fucking hot.He smiles welcomingly as we all pile onto his deck, but as his eyes land on me they flare and I swear to God I see a little spark there. The smile vanishes than reappears a little softer, a little darker.

Jordan speaks, breaking the moment into dust. “So! Be a good host and get me a beer.”

“Get it yourself, bitch,” Luc snarks with a smile and Jordan gives him a playful punch on the shoulder as he walks back into the house to retrieve his beer.

He comes out with beers for everyone and we settle in around the fire and start planning. Luc takes notes on his iPad balanced on his knee. We decide which NHL players and alumni to invite, which weekend to have the event, when to put tickets on sale and what to sell them for. But with every detail that’s decided comes a bigger list of everything that needs to get done, and Luc’s sexy face starts to turn into a grimace of stress. And the one thing none of us can help him with is picking the cause.

“It has to come from you, bro,” Jordan says. “You have to pick something that really means something to you.”

He nods and I catch a glimpse of his tongue resting on his bottom lip as he thinks and I feel that hot tingle of lust between my thighs. I shift in my chair.

“I have to think about that one,” he admits and his voice is low, like it’s some kind of failure.

Jordan gets up to grab another beer and Jessie leaves to use the bathroom. I lean over from my chair and place a hand on his. “It’s okay. We can book the venue and the arena and figure out the cause after. You’ve got a little time.”

He smiles at me gratefully and then he glances down. He runs his fingers over my forearm. “You’ve got goose bumps.”

He stands up and unties the plaid shirt from his waist and then walks around my chair and drapes it across my shoulders. He rubs them gently as he places it there and leans down to whisper in my ear. “You look beautiful tonight, Fleur.”

I tip my head and gaze up at him. KISS ME! I silently beg him. Jessie comes bouncing down the deck stairs and Luc pulls away and the moment disappears into the dark night.

Still, I feel a little flutter of victory inside my heart. There was a glimmer of something in those light brown eyes that I’ve never seen directed at me before. He looked at me like I was something new he hadn’t seen before. Something special. Something desirable. I swear it’s not just wishful thinking.

After two and a half hours of planning and an hour of just goofing off we call it a night. As we drive home Jessie keeps giving me curious glances in the rear view mirror. There’s a smirk on her lips and I know she’s got something to say so when we get inside the house and Jordan heads into the living room I stop her in the kitchen. “Say it.”

“What?”

“Whatever it is you’re thinking.”

She smiles again. “I’m thinking that you’re making a play for Luc.”

I feel defiant and self-conscious at the same time and can’t seem to look her in the eye. “So? Is that bad? And… is it that obvious?”

She shakes her head, auburn hair swinging. “Not incredibly obvious but I know you and normally you’d leave the house in overalls and a sweatshirt for a night drinking beers in someone’s backyard.”

I blush, embarrassed at having my plan exposed, and she walks over and gives me a hug. “All I have to say is good for you.”

“Really?”

“Rosie, it’s now or never,” she tells me giving me a tight squeeze before pulling back and holding my by the shoulders. “You’ve finished college and you’re trying to figure out your future and I’ve known forever that you see Luc in your future. So take the shot. See if it works. If it doesn’t, then at least you can move forward without wondering.”

She walks to the fridge and grabs a bottle of water and then heads towards the living room. She stops in the archway and smiles at me encouragingly. “For the record, Rose. I think it’s going to work.”

I drop down in one of the chairs at the kitchen table. Oh God, I hope she’s right.

Making A Play- Dirty Girl Romance

Your life will be beautiful because you, Flower, are beautiful. And you will find someone who will love you for it.”

When I first read One More Shot earlier this year, I was hooked on this series. Hot hockey players, angst, and steam, what else could I possibly ask for? Now if you haven’t read One More Shot yet, I highly recommend you do, because it’ll give you a much better background on the Caplan sisters and the dynamic they have between them. While you can easily read Making A Play as a standalone, I think you’d enjoy it more reading in order. Rose is first introduced in One More Shot as the youngest Caplan sister. Admittedly she’s not exactly the type of heroine I enjoy reading about; she’s shy, introverted, a little mousy and has been pining away for her Luc Richard as long as she’s known him.

Luc Richard is a successful hockey player. He’s basically grown up around Rose since her and her sisters were like family to the Garrison family who were like his family as well. While an attraction was always there, Luc always knew that Rose was just too good for the likes of him and so he friend zoned her. Now he’s in town to lick his wounds after his ex almost cost him his career and attempt to stay away from the spotlight and the gossip column. Rosie is determined to get him out of the friend zone while Luc is just as determined to keep them solidly there.

The relationship between these two was both sexy and frustrating. There were many a time when I wanted to reach through my kindle and knock some sense into The French Disaster. I also wanted Rose to grow a bigger backbone and really stand up for herself and show some growth. She may not have been the sassy and smart mouthed woman like her sisters, but she does grow into her own and she did grow on me.

If angst isn’t your thing, this book will probably frustrate the living hell out of you because it takes a good chunk of it (if not 3/4) for Luc to finally get his head out of his ass. I personally gobbled it up like the angst whore that I am.

I loved getting more of Jessie and Jordan in this one. It was great to get that continuation of their HEA and see where they are now. Then there was Callie; the oldest and the wild one of the three sisters.

Can you please say something snarky and inappropriate because if you get all sentimental and mushy, my heart will break for the millionth time in a week.
“Does he have a big dick?”
I laugh. “Thank you.”

I’m not sure what it is about her, but I’m just so intrigued by her story. She almost comes off borderline brash at times, but I can’t help but like her. There’s just something about her that screams that she’s hiding something. And that peek into what happened between her and Devin those years ago certainly whetted my appetite for the next book.

If you’re a reader that enjoys some angst with your sports romance then you definitely need to get acquainted with this author. Was this book perfect? Not quite. I could probably nitpick a few things but at the end of it I truly enjoyed the book so why bother? I think I enjoyed book 1 a little bit more but this was still a fantastic addition. But the book I’m REALLY looking forward to is still to come. I simply can’t wait to see how THAT turns out.

THE FINAL MOVE (Hometown Players #3) by Victoria Denault (December 8, 2015)

Hockey legend Devin Garrison thought he blew his shot. But his relationship with Callie Caplan just went into overtime.

If he’s honest, there has only been one woman who ever really excited him—Callie Caplan. They shared a night that was hotter than the late-summer sun, but in an instant Callie was gone, pretending it never happened.

Callie Caplan isn’t the wild child people think she is. It’s true she’s avoided relationships, but only because she’s seen how crazy love can be. And her messy, imperfect life is crazy enough without opening her heart to a man—even one as picture perfect as Devin. But when fate brings them back together—just as they need each other most—Devin is determined to convince Callie that what she’s feeling is real. And this final play may be their chance at forever…

Don’t cross the mob and you get to live. How many more mafia movies does Robert De Niro have to be in before people get that?

WARNING: Unpopular opinion

Let me preface my review by saying that clearly I’m in the VAST minority with my opinion. Most of my friends absolutely loved this book. So please take what I say with a grain of salt and keep in mind that it’s just my opinion. While it may not have worked for me, it may just work for you.

I realize that I’m reading fiction and I’m reading for enjoyment. However, I’m also an extremely analytical reader that finds it next near to impossible to shut my brain off and I tend to be picky. If you can take this book for what it is, you’ll most likely enjoy it. As for me? I felt that it took me completely out of the realm of reality. It was way too OTT for my tastes. Additionally there were quite a few plot issues that clearly had not been properly researched. Having knowledge of these particular things, made them stand out to me like a freaking neon sign. I’m of a mind that if you’re going to be writing about a particular culture, government agency, etc, you need to know what you’re writing. Getting even the most minute detail wrong can take something great and shoot it into something not so great in the span of a second.

Now here’s the thing, I loved the first book. Like five starred loved it. While book 2 wasn’t quite as good for me, I was really anticipating this conclusion to this epic story. I couldn’t wait to dive back into the ruthless world of Mel and Liam, especially after that cliff hanger in The Untouchables.

I’m a romance reader at heart, and there’s nothing better for me than a dark and gritty one. BUT and this is a big but, the romance has to be the predominant part of the story. I have to be able to like the characters I’m reading about and sadly I fell completely out of love with Mel and Liam in this book. Clearly these characters are not heroes, or even anti-heroes. They’re the villains, and they’re cutthroat. But just because I know that they’re not the good guys and obviously are not going to do good things, doesn’t mean that I want front row seat to the show. I don’t want to read (in detail) about the torture and death of innocent victims at their hands (highlight to view spoiler)The cop’s mistress and wife, FBI agents (end spoiler)That was the beginning of the end for me. As soon as that happened, I was so bothered that I began to nitpick practically every other thing that I didn’t like.
What can I say?

I should have just DNF’d, but I wanted to see how it ended…so I pushed myself through.

Unfortunately the further I read, the further we began to get from the scope of reality. Some of the things that take place were so completely over the top they were just plain unbelievable. Let’s allow that a mafia family is so powerful that can afford to buy their own “puppet” into presidency. But let’s not forget certain things like political protocol and how things work either…

“The FBI are the police of the United States! I am the head of the United States…

Fine. I won’t touch on the errors of ^^^ that. However, when said mafia comes to said president asking for EXTREMELY confidential list of undercover FBI agents, the president, no matter being the head of the United States does NOT have the power to get that information overnight. It doesn’t matter if he’s going to be going to the head of the FBI…

Then you have a ‘terrorist threat’ making a demand that the head of FBI and the president both stand down or else they’re going to (highlight to view spoiler) kill the undercover FBI agent they capture. Agent. As in one. (end spoiler)and the president says this?

I have congressmen, governors, the FBI, CIA, and Interpol turning to me for a plan!

Really? Where’s the NSA during this kerfuffle? How about Homeland Security? Or the fact that the president is not going to be the sole decision maker here.

Then there was the epilogue where we leave the realm of possibility so far, I felt I was in a different universe. (view spoiler)[Mel becomes governor and is on her way to running for presidency while Liam is the head of the Irish Mob. (hide spoiler)] I mean FFS. Really? Le sigh.

Maybe if the over abundance of gratuitous violence didn’t initially turn me off I could have looked past the rest of the issues I had, but it did and I couldn’t. I wouldn’t really categorize this as a romance, or at least it wasn’t for me. This was more suspense and thriller with a erotic sex scenes. But when it started getting so OTT, I quickly lost touch with the romantic aspect of this book (as in I couldn’t even remember it)

I told you all I’m a picky bitch.

Sadly, as much as I was looking forward to this book, it really didn’t work for me. While I enjoyed the first 30%, I had to push myself through to the end. It just wasn’t my cuppa. So many people loved it though, so please take my review for what it is: just one opinion. Read it yourself and form your own.

Character Interview & #Giveaway with Chuito from ★The Slayer★ by @Kele_Moon

For weeks now, you’ve read all about my excited for this one book in the series spotlight I did leading up to it. If you’ve missed the posts, you can find them all here (week 1, week 2, week 3, week 4). Now it’s rare for me to rave and gush about books because it truly takes a lot to blow me away. The Slayer did. It rocked my world so hard, and I simply cannot wait for you all to meet the truly sigh, swoon, and lust inducing alpha male that is Chuito. That’s why I’m so excited to actually have the man here, at DGR, to say a few words in an exclusive interview. Don’t ask me what I had to do to actually get him to say anything, the damn man is so private I think I may have promised him both my ovaries in exchange for him being here. But he’s here and you all get an exclusive sneak peak into the man that will be melting your kindles come March 31st.

*Chuito walks into the room and takes a seat in the chair*

(awkward pause ensues where Lana stares at him with her jaw on the floor)

Chuito arches an eyebrow, staring at her for a long moment before he asked, “Are you okay, chica?”
Lana:  Uhem. Sorry about that. I was just….ummm…distracted? Yeah. Distracted by your tattoos…. (subtly goes back to ogling)
Chuito:  “They make you nervous?” he asked, somewhat defensive as if on instinct.
Lana: “Nervous? No…no, not at all. They’re just very…um…nice?” And I may want to lick them
Chuito:  “Oh, okay.” He gives her a bemused smirk, though it seems genuine. “Thanks. I guess.”
Lana:  So let’s just jump right in since I know you’re a busy man. Thank you so much for being here today and allowing me to interview you.
Chuito:  Yeah, sure. I’m actually not that busy. My life is pretty boring most days. Where I live, there’s not too much to do besides eat, sleep and train.
In comparison to Miami, Garnet is like a turtle on Quaaludes. It’s probably why our camp puts out such good fighters. Training is all we got there.
Lana:  What would you say is your greatest flaw?
Chuito:  Just one? Um, probably not being able to let things go. I don’t forgive. I don’t forget. Hurt me. Hurt my family. It stays with me. Forever.
Lana:  Now how about your greatest strength?
Chuito:  I have endurance when it comes to pursuing a goal. It’s hard to take me down or stop me when I set my mind on accomplishing something.
Lana:  And since we’re on a theme here, what is your greatest weakness?
Chuito:  Probably the same as above. I don’t stop. Even when it hurts me, it’s hard for me to take my eye off what I’m trying to get done. I’ve hurt myself in the past with this mentality. I’ve hurt others who loved me and stood by me too.
Lana:  What do you think others think of you?
Chuito:  I guess it depends on what others you’re referring to. Most people probably think I’m a pendejo. Believe me, they’re not gonna stamp that I was a great guy on my headstone.
But, there are a few people who would call me loyal. Not sure if it’s good or bad, but they do say it and I do try to take care of my responsibilities.
Lana:  You’ve made quite a reputation for yourself in the fighting circuit and you continue to be undefeated. What would you say is the biggest reason for your success?
Chuito:  I don’t think there’s any one reason for success in fighting.
Most of it was luck. Being in the right place at the right time when Clay was scouting for the Cellar. Part of it is genetics. Being built big and mean. Part of it is probably where I came from. Learning to fight young, etc.
As for keeping the titles? Not quitting. Being a glutton for punishment. Having a good crew at the Cellar. Good training partners. There being jack shit to do in Garnet.
There’s lots of reasons why I’m hard to beat.
Lana:  As famous as you’ve become, we haven’t seen any leading ladies on your arm. Are you currently dating?
Chuito:  No.
Lana:  How would you describe your perfect woman?
Chuito:  Smart, tenacious, loving and forgiving, when I can’t be.
Lana:  You’re definitely a bachelor that I’m sure lots of ladies have their eye on. Do you see yourself settling down any time soon? A wife, 2.5 kids, and white picket fences in your future?
Chuito:  No.
Lana:  If someone were to write your life story, what are three things you’d want them to make clear?
Chuito:  I would never want someone to write my life story. Never. I’ve been lucky in a lot of ways, but overall my life story isn’t pretty.
Lana:  Anything you’d like to close this interview with?

Chuito:  Not really. I sort of suck at interviews to be honest. Sorry about that.

And there you have it, ladies and ovaries. That is all I managed to squeeze out of the man. Guess you’ll have to wait to read his book to truly get to know all his deep and dark secrets. But let me tell you…this is not a book you’ll want to miss.
