Spring Fling Spotlight & Giveaway #4: Our 2017 faves…so far

Confession time; we’re a bunch of picky bitches here at DGR. True story. Especially me. I have pet peeves for my pet peeves. Swear to god. It’s a curse. LMAO. But then our 2017 started off strong, and kept going and going and going, until we had so many 5 stars under our belts, we were positively full of good book mojo glee. It’s totally a thing. Go with me here.

So we figured, being the picky bitches that we are, these 5 star reads need to be shouted from the rooftops. So this will be a HUGE spotlight we do for the next several weeks. We’ll be featuring a book per post and telling you just why this happened to make our top favorites (so far) list.

 

It’s post four of our spring fling spotlight, and no list could be complete without my obsession with Nashoda Rose and full on fangirl gushing. It’s no secret that I love everything this woman writes. She creates this mix of angst and grit that I gobble up with a spoon and beg for more. Her alphas are tortured, protective, sexy as all get out, and of course they’re dirty talkers…because DUH. But in all seriousness, ever since she first wrote Torn From You, I became completely obsessed with all things Tear Asunder. It feels like I’ve been waiting forever for Kite to finally get his book and finally, FINALLY it was in my grabby little hands. You know when you spend years waiting for a certain character, you build him up in your head, your hope and anticipation gets the best of you and you think no way can the book be as good as I hope? Well that was definitely the case with Kept From You. Because it wasn’t as good as I hoped, it was BETTER. This never happens to my picky self and I will forever worship at the alter of this author’s greatness because of it. If you haven’t read this series yet, you’re sorely missing out. And if you’ve read it, you already know why I’m obsessed with it! I adored this second chance romance. So much. If you haven’t read it yet, you need to. You can easily read it as a standalone but I highly recommend the entire series be read in order to really appreciate each detail.

Technically, I don’t live here. I only use it when volatile pressures demand that I put some distance between the Upper West Side family mansion and myself. I would never stray far for long. For one thing, I’ve accepted that my family would never leave me alone.

I know what I know. So they’ve made it their business to keep me on a short leash. But with over three hundred properties in my personal portfolio, and a few thousand more under the family firm’s control, there are many places to disappear to when the demons howl.

Today, the Midtown penthouse is my temporary haven.

I turn when the timer beeps a one-minute warning.

I return to my desk and adjust the voice distorter. When the clock reaches zero, I click the mouse. “Gentlemen, start your bids.”

My words barely trail off before the first five bids appear on the screen. Sixty seconds later, the total bid is at a quarter of a million dollars. I steeple my fingers and wish I were more excited. The money means nothing. It never has. It’s the end game that excites me.

I re-confirm the first and delete the second.

AUTHOR Q & A

DGR: What was your favorite scene in Beautiful Liar?

ZC: It’s almost impossible to choose a favorite scene but one of my favorites has to be the first time Quinn & Elly meet “in real life”. He doesn’t look at or acknowledge her as she serves him his lunch, but she’s completely electrified by him. When he gets up to leave he sees this woman that he’s only seen through his camera lens and he’s in turn captivated, but only for a second because he can’t reveal who he is. Portraying their emotions during that scene was fantastic to write.

DGR: What was the most difficult scene to write in Beautiful Liar?

ZC: Hmm, maybe this should come with a spoiler alert, but it’s the heartbreaking moment when Quinn watches his mother take her own life. That was heartbreaking to write because he lost the only person who loved him, until Lucky came along.

The hate, the vengeance and sex are instruments that oil my existence and keep my compass true.

HOLY. SHIT.

I did NOT see this book coming. I’m so happy it got a title and cover change because the old one didn’t do it justice AT ALL. I’m serious. If you think this is yet another run of the mill smut filled romance read, think again. The writing. The story. It was hauntingly captivating. I’m absolutely blown away and got myself a new author to stalk.

Q is a man of wealth and power. He’s a man skirting the fine edge of revenge and depravity and he makes no excuses or apologies. Every single move is calculated to achieve his end goal. His revenge. To right a wrong of years past, to punish those responsible, even if he doesn’t survive to bask in the glory of the fallout. It’s not time to make his most calculated move yet. Everything he’s been doing has been leading up to this…his grand plan. And the key to it is a woman with haunted eyes and a closet full of skeletons who may be hiding more baggage then even him. Lucky.

The writing in this story is absolute perfection. It’s haunting and lyrical. The characters are so well developed, they practically have an energy that you can feel through the pages. The sheer power of Q’s presence is enough to captivate even the most cynical reader.

Quinn Blackwood’s eyes are soulless pools. Staring into them is like staring into a bottomless abyss in the middle of a post-apocalyptic nightmare.

Every word has a purpose. Every description leading to a new revelation. It was dark and hypnotic. Erotic and captivating. I was glued to every single page, practically salivating for more.

While Q was an erotic enigma full of sex appeal and secrets, Lucky was an interesting blend of cracked glass about to shatter but with a hidden steel reinforcement. This is a woman that survived her own hell and will do anything to escape it…even sell her body and her dignity for a million dollars.

We’re caught in a cycle of wrath and cruelty and sex. He’s unleashed his darkness, and I’m the sex-hypnotized recipient of all of it. Even after he roars his climax, he keeps going, keeps flaying me.

A voice cleverly disguised by state of the art technology and a face hidden behind a steel mask is all she sees of Q. The rest is a veil of blindfolds, mind games, and sex so mind-blowing that she struggles to hold on to the fact that none of it is real…and it doesn’t take long for the lines to begin to blur… for both of them.

God, I want to fuck you till you break. I may not be the right person to put you back together, but I want to do it anyway.”

This story is so much more than a romance. It’s a story of survival and revenge. It’s a sizzling romance wrapped around a captivating mystery. It’s a splash of dark and suspense. And while the book is long, the pacing was perfect.

If you’re looking for a new author to check out and a read that’s totally different from the norm, this is the one book I can’t recommend enough. Zara Cox now has a forever fan in this girl. I will gleefully pick up anything this woman writes. No questions asked. She’s a talent that I wish I discovered sooner and am kicking myself for not reading this book when it first hit my radar. But better late then never, if you ask me.

Maybe my cracks aren’t so bad. Maybe the chasm isn’t as deep as I thought. Maybe she’ll take the leap with me. Maybe with her, I’ll survive the fall. Maybe she’ll even save me. Maybe. Maybe. Maybe…it’s too late.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to immediately dive into book 2!

For our third spotlight, I bring you the perfection that is this romantic comedy. Brooke Blaine, as I loving refer to as a dirty hooker (She loves it. Swears! She even wrote a book titled Hooker. She knows what’s up), seriously knocked it out of the park with this book. I’m telling you guys, P.I.T.A. may have been my favorite romantic comedy I’ve read to date. I have all of the love for this book!! Besides being laugh until you pee funny, it also had some of THE best banter I’ve read. Now you all already know I love me my enemies to lovers and this book delivered on that front SO HARD. So hard I tells ya! Also, I adore the fact that Brooke writes about such a deep female bond friendship in this series. It’s so rare to find books with true female friendship, a la Sex and the City. It deserves 5 stars for that alone. Did I also mention that Paige was my spirit animal? We’d be total BFFs in real life. Why? Because of conversations like this

“You know, this is a perfect example of why I call you Pita.”
“Why? Because I stick up for myself? Because I call people out when they’re assholes? Because I have fucking balls of steel?” One of the bellhops we passed stopped in his tracks at my admission, and stared at me with wide eyes. “What?” I asked. “You wanna see my steel balls? Dawson, put me down so I can show him.”

Mmmm hmm. See?! She’s full of awesome! So let’s catch up here…

It’s like Harris has the midas touch when it comes to romantic suspense; whatever she writes is pure gold. Hot Addiction couldn’t have a more appropriate name because it was the most addictive, high octane thrill ride that was just as entertaining as it was deliciously hot!

Being a sucker for a second chance romance (because ANGST), I downright salivated when I read the blurb to this one.

She’d felt like she’d loved him forever, and she’d never thought he would feel the same way she did. He’d been her best friend’s big brother, and he hadn’t looked at her twice- until suddenly he did. Her life hadn’t been the same after that.

Dex had been Annabelle’s entire world once. He was her best friend’s older brother, the love of her life, and the man she was going to marry…until she left him at the altar with nothing but a text to his sister. There was so much animosity and emotion between these two, you could cut the tension with a knife. Annabelle didn’t leave Dex of her own free will and Dex will never know the reasons why. Heck, they no longer matter five years later, because he won’t forgive her anyway. There’s too much water under that bridge and way too many secrets. But when Dex realizes just how much danger Belle is in, somehow the adrenaline and hatred begins to turn into something more. The feelings from the past resurface. But can Dex forgive her the betrayal of their past in order to get a future for them?

She got inside his head and churned his brains to mush. She also made him crazy with need.

I loved the angst between them. Theirs was a slow burn that was a delicious sizzle of need that eventually combusted into a raging storm of emotion and passion. I couldn’t turn the pages quick enough. No one writes suspense and action quite like Harris and man but she outdid herself here. Not to mention there’s a delicious little tidbit about the mysterious Colonel and his potential heroine that I gobbled up with a spoon! HOLY SET UP, BATMAN! SO. MUCH. NEED.

Hot Addiction was a perfect blend of romance and action. I loved watching Dex slowly unravel and realize his old feelings for Belle never left. They burned up the pages together. But now I’m actually shaking with need for the next book because OMG! That. Setup. Have I mentioned how much I need that book? BECAUSE NEED!

If you haven’t read this series yet, I HIGHLY recommend it. Each book can be read as a standalone, but would be better enjoyed if read in order.

Even though these two hopped into bed together less than 15% into the book, the sexual tension between them never diminished. I typically like my books with a good sexual sizzle and burn, and I was surprised on how much of it was delivered here. I adored Erik and Olivia together. Erik went after her with single minded intent and I loved watching him break down all her walls. I also loved the way that Olivia was there for him and helped him with the demons of his past. Erik’s PTSD was no laughing matter, and it wasn’t brushed under the rug. You really get to see him struggle and deal with it. I seriously adored Olivia’s silent strength in helping him though it.

And while I loved Erik and Olivia, there was one other couple that totally stole the show for me at a point and holy crap but I need their story. That set up? Beyond delicious. I loved the secondary characters introduced in the form of Erik’s firefighter buddies and can’t wait for their stories either.

As for this one? It was one sizzling and entertaining read, full of humor and steam that I enjoyed from beginning to finish!

Joe was such a refreshing change of pace. This is not a player or a cocky alphahole. This man exudes stability and dependability. He’s sweet, supportive, hard working, and he knows exactly how to break down all of Alex’s walls. He does it so unassumingly too, that she never sees it coming.

Kylie Scott created such multilayered characters with these two. I adored Alex and all her quirks. She wasn’t perfect and she knew her faults, but she owned them. I loved her friendship with her best friend and the way they had each other’s back. I also loved Joe’s quiet intensity. He wasn’t a man of many words, but the few that he did have were always meaningful and they never failed to affect Alex on every level.

Butterflies didn’t cover it. There were pterodactyls inside my stomach, swooping and screeching and flying around. Not even they, however, could compete with the throbbing ache in my pussy.

Twist is a story that isn’t all wit, humor and steam. There’s also an serious undercurrent to it that I absolutely adored. It dips into acceptance and strength and perserverence. It really delves deep into embracing our differences and moving past the cruelty of others. It was such an emotional part of the book for me to read and I seriously love that Kylie wove that into the story.

As for the romance? Well you already know that I loved it. I also loved catching up with the rest of the gang. If it’s possible, I can dare say that even Eric is starting to grow on me. Which is good, considering his book is next. I can’t wait to meet the woman that will bring this manwhore to his knees.

I’m also willing to beg for a book for Nell. Not that the part we got for her wasn’t satisfying, but I’d seriously kill for more.

But ultimate, Twist was another winner for me. I loved it just as much as the first book and can’t recommend it enough for readers that love their romance with a splash of witty humor.

Once my guard was down, due to complete and utter exhaustion, Joe had cuddled me. It was terrible, disgusting. Fingers caressing me, lips pressing soft kisses to my shoulder and the back of my neck. Normally I’d never allow it, but it felt so good.

Spring Fling Spotlight & Giveaway #2: Our 2017 faves…so far

Confession time; we’re a bunch of picky bitches here at DGR. True story. Especially me. I have pet peeves for my pet peeves. Swear to god. It’s a curse. LMAO. But then our 2017 started off strong, and kept going and going and going, until we had so many 5 stars under our belts, we were positively full of good book mojo glee. It’s totally a thing. Go with me here.

So we figured, being the picky bitches that we are, these 5 star reads need to be shouted from the rooftops. So this will be a HUGE spotlight we do for the next several weeks. We’ll be featuring a book per post and telling you just why this happened to make our top favorites (so far) list.

For our second spotlight, I bring you quite possibly the sweetest and swooniest romantic comedy I’ve read this year. It’s probably my favorite from this author to date, and that’s saying something, considering I’ve loved her entire backlist. In even MORE amazing news, did you hear that the film rights for Royally Screwed (book 1 in this series) have been optioned! AHHHH!!!! It just makes it that much better. But really, let’s talk about this book for a second, shall we? I read this one back on Valentine’s Day  and I couldn’t have picked a better book to read. Because this book! ALL OF THE FEELS! For someone that grew up on the classics and adores all thing Jane Austen, this story was calling to my inner mushy parts. This heroine is my spirit animal. A more shy and introverted version of my spirit animal, but still. It melted my cold black heart. I’m seriously on the swoon train, on the way to swoon city here and I plan on riding the train over and over and over again. Don’t get me started on the perfection that’s Henry or the laugh out loud bits and the glorious writing. Because gah! Just. GAH. Where do I even begin? PERFECTION

Spring Fling Spotlight & Giveaway #1: Our 2017 faves…so far

Confession time; we’re a bunch of picky bitches here at DGR. True story. Especially me. I have pet peeves for my pet peeves. Swear to god. It’s a curse. LMAO. But then our 2017 started off strong, and kept going and going and going, until we had so many 5 stars under our belts, we were positively full of good book mojo glee. It’s totally a thing. Go with me here.

So we figured, being the picky bitches that we are, these 5 star reads need to be shouted from the rooftops. So this will be a HUGE spotlight we do for the next several weeks. We’ll be featuring a book per post and telling you just why this happened to make our top favorites (so far) list.

To start things off, I really didn’t have to think too hard which book to pick. This was the book that first started my 5 star book mojo and it deserves all of the stars for that alone. I read this book back in October of last year, actually, so you may be thinking why I’m featuring it in my 2017 faves? Well, my suspicious friend, the reason is quite simple actually. I’ve since re-read this book 3 times. Yep. Thrice. I wanted to start my year of with a top favorite re-read and I couldn’t think of a better book to do it with than this gut wrencher. That’s totally a word. Go with me here.

See here’s the thing, I actually hate and I mean HATE love triangles. I usually avoid them like a venereal disease. By practicing love triangle abstinence. 

Death from angst overload. It’s a thing. Look up Thoughtless. But I digress.

This book was clearly a triangle. So why did I read it? Well, for one, I’m a glutton for punishment. For two, I love this author. And for three, this blurb hooked me, line and sinker. I had to read it. I needed to read it. And you know what? This book ruined me. RUINED me. I loved it. I loved it beyond words!!

Alright, confession time.
True story. And usually the mere thought of a trilogy is enough to make me break out in hives. Why? Because I’ll usually find book two to be more filler, and I’m pretty much bored and uninterested by book three. So you may be asking yourself, why on earth did this crazy heifer read a trilogy then? And to that, my doubting friend, I only have one answer for you. Skye Warren wrote it. It doesn’t matter what this woman writes. She can write the damn alphabet and I’ll read it.

If I can describe this trilogy for you in one word, it’ll be intense. And not only does it start that way in book one, but it only gets more and more intense as the story progresses.

He fucks me like I’m the enemy, like he can vanquish me.”

Not only was I still riveted to every single word of this book and story, but I was fully invested and addicted. It doesn’t get more intense than Gabriel. It just doesn’t. And the man only gets better and better with each look into the depths of his dark soul.

A sense of inevitability overcomes me, the same as watching the moon rise in the sky. There’s no way that we can change the tides. All we can do is cling to the mast, the way I’m clinging to Gabriel now. He’s my ship, my center. My only hope for surviving the night.”

Skye Warren is a literary genius. The way she weaves her words is downright magical. Greek mythology, chess analogies, and dark intensity all wrapped around a romance that’s as erotic as it is forbidden. An innocent virgin falling for her captor and protector. A man who has seen too much darkness in his life to be anything less than a monster, allowing some of her light to seep through his heart’s cracks. All of it blended flawlessly through a captivating story of betrayal and vengeance that goes to show that monsters are real and can break even the strongest of spirits.

I’m not made of marble or anything hardy like that. I’m built from crystal flutes and rare silk. From the brushstrokes of my mother’s portrait. I’m a shadow of a human being, only a cautionary tale whispered from mother to daughter. A collection of dangerous words. I’m a myth. And as long as I don’t speak, I can bury myself.”

The Castle was the perfect conclusion to a series that captivated me from the very first. The Endgame trilogy was a story that kept me glued to the pages. The intensity built with each new book. With each secret that gets revealed. With each depravity that comes to light. It was addicting. It was heart pounding. It was completely unputdownable.

5 – Do you even have to ask how many stars I’m giving this??? – Stars

A Love Letter to Skye Warren…..Maybe more like a Crazy Fan-Girl Letter….Same thing.

Ok, this should be a book review for The Castle. But let’s be honest. Everyone KNOWS The Castle was brilliant, and if you don’t, then you should obviously read it (After The Pawn & The Knight). But what I really want to do is write a love letter to Skye Warren. Because I’m in luuuurve with her. Ok, not really….Well, maybe a little.
GABRIEL. Can I have him? Seriously, I want you to write a Gabriel story EVERY…..DAY and send me the story. No one else. Just me. Especially not Lana. BECAUSE HE’S MINE!! That’s why I want you in my basement. So no one else can have Gabriel. It’s a completely reasonable request.
Dear, Skye. I’m just over here with your favorite thing to lure you into my house so I can lock you up in my basement. (Jk. I’m not a crazy person…..not really.) Seriously. I want to meet you. And brunch with you. And just…..talk. Because you are brilliant. I love your words on pages. I love your STORIES. Ugh, your stories. I love those people in your head that talk to you and make you put them on paper. Ugh, all your characters. I am completely intimidated by you. This whole series and all of your books leave my jaw on the ground.

Ugh. This letter is getting cray. I should probably go before people think I’m cray.
