Inspiration Behind the Series
Reluctance Series – M.A. Stacie

My Reluctance Series started as one book: The first one.

Beneath the Surface blossomed from a very odd starting point. I was watching the Olympic London 2012 opening ceremony. David Beckham was bringing the torch along the Thames in a speedboat. He was wearing an immaculate cut suit, and a wry little grin. I may have swooned aloud. I remember reaching for my pad and pink pen, the ideas flashing into my head at lightning speed.

That night, by the end of the opening ceremony, I had the book plotted and the characters fleshed out. I amazed myself.

This isn’t how ideas usually come to me, and when I do have a plot idea, it normally needs to percolate in my head for a while. I normally spend a few weeks adding a couple of ideas at a time, then thinking it over. I never get a whole story with the entire A to Z plot in one go.

Beneath The Surface was very different. It was the fastest I’ve ever written a first draft, and maybe to this day, it’s the book I’m most proud of. It just wrote itself.

However, I found that as I wrote about Taylor Reese, I liked him. I knew the book I was writing didn’t show the side to him that I had envisioned in my head. I wanted my readers to see that, which left me with one option. To make Beneath The Surface book one of a series.

That’s when my usual percolating began.

I voiced my thoughts to my beta reader, Jan, wondering if I was crazy for wanting to start a series. I read them all the time, but dislike the ones that end on a cliffhanger. It always feels unfair to the reader. Therefore, I was adamant that each book could be read alone, but would work as a series because the characters would continue through each book. I also didn’t want to be a lot of books in the series. I went over book one, looking for the right people to ‘offshoot’.

Taylor was marked for the second book because I was determined to tell his story. I wanted to give him a happy ending. Trace, Dale’s brother, stood out too. In book one he had a girlfriend, but a new idea for him started to form, a plot that I could sink my teeth into. The idea gave me enough angst to decide that he was my third book.

At that point I just had to pitch it to my publisher. Originally, I’d told them Beneath the Surface was a standalone. Clearly, they were as excited as I was, and after submitting my ideas for the books, they agreed to the expansion.

I’m on the other side now, having written all of the books. I still have edits to do for book three, Beyond The Seduction, so I haven’t said goodbye to the characters completely.

I know I’ll miss writing them. They’ve been a huge part of my life for the last two years. However, I’ve given them all a happy ending, and it’s time for something new.

mstacie_hi-resM. A. Stacie is never without a book or her eReader. A voracious reader, with a love of sexy, yet angst ridden novels, she adores getting lost in new worlds. Her need to write did not grip her until after her second son was born, when her previous rambles became fully fledged stories.

She describes herself as one huge contradiction, and though not the most conventional of hobbies, she counts getting new tattoos as one of hers. Running keeps her sane, along with knitting and listening to loud music.
